JCM 2000 DSL50 problems?

Hello,

I have a JCM 2000 DSL 50W head and I am using it with a 4x12 Marshall 1960 angled cabinet. I believe that something is wrong, and I feel that it is probably the head that is malfunctioning somehow.

The problems are low volume, I can turn the gain on the overdrive channel to 8-10, and having the volume on 10 and it gets drowned by the drumkit.
The volume is low, and the sound lacks treble even if I turn it up all the way, the sound is also very "bassy" even though I turn the bass to 0.
It can sound pretty good with the volume knob turned to about 4, but when it gets turned passed 6-7 something happens, the sound gets the above mentioned character, an almost flanger like sound.
I have heard that this head should be pretty loud, so I am suspecting something is wrong when our drumkit is drenching it with the volume maxed.

Does someone have any ideas what could be wrong with this head?

Thanks in advance. /Jens

Replace the tubes with a decent set and install a couple of fans to cool the tubes.

X2 on replacing the valves. The fan isn't needed.

You'll have to take it to a tech to have the bias checked/adjusted to the new power valves. But sounds to me like you're definitely in need of a power valve replacement.

I am not a techie guy, and I believe these guys are probably right, but would add one thing, I use the same amp and if you are running anything in the effects loop be sure you have the pushbutton effects level in the back at the right setting for the outboard gear you are using. I experienced a similar thing at a gig setup a few weeks ago only to find out the button had been inadvertantly pushed during moving my head.

Bad advice on the fan. Those things generate EMF that can cause noise and most of the time, blows lint and dirt everywhere. The DSL50 should work fine without a fan.

Check the bias on the output tubes.

You probably have a bad preamp tube. Change those out. If that doesn't fix the problem, change the power tubes & Re-bias. If that doesn't work, get back to us.
