Well I really need to apologize for the sad playing, unfortunately I work on them better then I play them. But I will do some clips with humbuckers tomorrow. I went and bought a new SM57 today.
Oh I know...we go back n' forth on the "ribbing". It's what makes this place enjoyable.

Seriously, would love to hear your opinion on those FREDs. Some say they're hype, others say they're the holy grail. Let's hear your story on them once your amp's up and running.
Remember we were yakking about the FRED's? Well I don't see any major difference in the way the amps sounds as compared to regular 1N4007's at all. I think it's more Internet Hype. It might help if we were running a kick drum through the amp, faster recovery in the supply but who knows. You wanna try these PM me.

Phuck it...not even worth my time. I figured as much. SS diodes either work or they don't, and the sound of these amps wasn't based around fast recovery diodes anyway.

Maybe his mixer had a healthy dose of beans before the recording session.

Seriously though...there's just something magic about the tone of a Strat through a Univibe.

Next week we'll have a Marshall Bluesbreaker reissue coming in for a full overhaul. We're doing up a point to point board with carbon comp resistors and the Sozo Mustard Vintage handmade caps, and upgrading the OT with a Mercury Magnetics Radiospares clone along with a Mercury 7H choke. We're doing up the exact Bluesbreaker board layout with a slight modification to the tremolo circuit...we've decided to use the LDR coupled Fender tremolo from the AB763 Twin schematic. We're also dropping the filtering to the original 32+32uF and 16+16uF from the current reissue values of 50+50uF. Topping it all off with a pair of Alnico Golds and a pair of Gold Lion KT66 output valves. Should come MUCH closer to the Bluesbreakers "Beano" album tone.

FREDs (You only really need Fast recovery diodes - FREDs are overkill IMO) have an advantage in the sense the there is reduced switching noise and with that reduced noise comes less transients being shot into the cct and back into the PT. In the long run, this can have negative and harmful effects.

So in terms of tone, yeah, I doubt that's you'll hear a difference but you might hear a difference in noise. Fast recovery diodes are almost the same price as regular diodes so its a no-brainer, really.

Ok more crappy ass demos! This is a 1975 Fender Telecaster Deluxe straight into the amp, no FX raw. And Paolo was right my mix desk is buggerd, I need to rebuild the master section!

Ouch! That sounds like crap. Maybe you should get some better recordings before posting 'em up. I'm sure that the amp sounds much better than that

My mega computer system opens "all" files. I had no problems with getting your Trower file to play. Man, them Univibes sound awesome. I never bought one. I guess I should have.

Well you definitely play the right guitar for one. Strats through a Univibe are truly a voice from heaven.

OFF TOPIC-Sorry Major...

When I was in the Air Force, Robin Trower was like my main favorite guitarist. I had all of his first four albums on vinyl. The artwork was fantastic and the music was truly one of a kind.

How much does a vintage Univibe go for? Are there any out there for sale?

Wow! They're really high dollar. $700 for an original Univox controller box and foot controller. Is Roger Mayer the "new" Univibe manufacturer? Let me know.

Maj that is bad ass! I wouldn't know the first thing about building an amp hehe.

Cool as sheet man!

Post some more clips when you get a chance. I'd like to hear more of it.

I didn't look back but what are you running in the preamp for tubes? You said Tungy's for power tubes right?

No, he's running EH EL34's, but he is going to replace them with the 6CA7EH's.

Why don't you tell the Major how you feel about them?

Oh ok.

Oh I'm still liking the 6CA7Eh's. Raw R&R tones that gets better with a nice preamp stack of NOS. I'm pretty happy with what I'm getting out of my DSL using these.

Love the bottom end, mids are warm but present(These tubes scoop in the mids if you lower the mid EQ knob to a certain point suddenly, the most I've experienced). They are fine though when EQ'd normally(around 4 and up).The top end isn't harsh but again present. Similar to a EL34L except the El34L's are more restrained in the top end.

Even though these break up later I don't find them stiff at all and have no problems getting them to overdrive.

Hope they work well for you too Maj!

If anyone here gets an original Univibe, I'd like to know what the "off" resistance is of the photoresistor in the LDR. Nobody seems to have the answer to this question.

Re: MajorNut JCM 800 Build.

Hey guys going to try to get all you answered in one post.

First of all I want to apologies for the horrible recordings, Paolo was right my mix board is fried in the master sections so there bad sound and a lot of bass farting; fresh ones soon.

Uni-Vibe, it’s my favorite effect which shows my age lol. I bought mine in Jr. High at a garage sale with a broken pedal. It is an original Shin-Ei, it the most liquid sounding effect there is. And Wilder is right the Strat is the best guitar to run through the Vibe. I had a guy offer me $675US (without the pedal) for mine last year, but I won’t part with it. Trower was the main reason I wanted one. Roger Mayer’s vibe is real close sounding but not quite there, even the Fulltone doesn’t sound the same as mine. The official legal owner of the Uni-vibe now is Dunlop and there’s sucks sound wise and tends to break a lot. Most of the modern day clone are snotty sounding and have that low-end flub problem. But for the low budget one the BBE Soul Vibe is good, you just have to open it up and re-tune the range POT.

My EH 6CA7’s will be here tomorrow so we will see how that goes and I like bottom end; just ask my wife. Wilder help me with a few extra mods for this amp, including a resonance control and some fine tuning in the gain stages. I monkey’d with tone stack I not telling you where. I have two Amperex 12AX7 old boys in V1 & V2; the PI is JJ ECC83s because they are tough bastards.

If you really wanna try an interesting mod, place a cap in parallel with that resonance pot. You can also do one in series with the pot, or either or (just one in parallel or just one in series). Experiment with different values until you find one you like.
