I think the JTM deserves P2P board. I don't use carbon comps unless the customer demands them, too noisy. Did they request the Sozo caps or is that just what you use? I don't know why Marshall upped the cap values, an of the shelf RI don't even sound like a 45! Sounds more JTM 50'ish. are going to return to the old values on the first cathode & the tone stack ?
Actually no, I twist them by hand believe it or not.

In regards to the Bluesbreaker, the customer requested the carbon comps and the Sozo caps. I personally prefer the carbon film resistors and Sozo caps, but I can do whatever the customer wants. Everything is being done as per the original schematic with exception of the trem circuit of course.

Ya I still love my Mallory 150's But I had to use SBE's for my .022 mfd on this amp.

Re: MajorNut JCM 800 Build.

Well it's up and running! Sounds ok, I want up the gain more in a few stages. UMMMMM that new amp smell. Ok plates are steady @ 466vdc drawing
76.4mA per side. Bias voltage is -41.6vdc. The bottom end is thunderous, but not flubby, very defined. Top end is very bright, might be the power tubes. Distorts very smoothly, almost not typical Marshall midrange honk; I used a
56k slope resistor not the normal 33k. going to by-pass the 820 using a switch & .68mfd, used a .68mfd on the presence POT; nice and glassy. will get more pics up later.

Cheers guys!

Major...with that 56K slope resistor...don't forget that max plate dissipation for EL34s is 35+ watts so make sure and bias it at 87mA per power valve...THIS IS VERY CRITICAL! If you don't, you're a bloody wanker! *'major' sarcasm*

Seriously...glad to here you got her running. I got about 95% of the chassis wiring complete on this Super Lead build...wish I could find my damn camera. She's lookin' great and can't wait to hear it.

How did I not see this yet?!?!?!?
Congrats on your build Major, looks sweet, can't wait to hear clips.
If I could suggest that you leave the amp as is and play it for a couple of weeks. This is to allow everything to settle and burn in a bit so that the true tone comes out. Then start making decisions on whether it needs less highs, more gain etc.
You might be suprised at how much the tone could change, you don't want to tame highs now and find you want them back in two weeks time.

I'm eventually beginning design work on my Mark II amp, the 100 watt version of the 16 Watter I designed earlier in the year. Looking forward to bouncing ideas off you if you don't mind?

I will take you up on letting her settle for a week. It sounds great, these EH tube are very bright though. The only thing i really want to do now is by-pass the 820ohm with a .68mfd thats all more umffffffffff! love to hear your Idea's don't hesitate!

You can also place a 1M resistor in series with that 0.68uF and have a switch that shorts/unshorts across the resistor so that you can switch it in and out if you like both sounds.

Oh...I thought you were going to use the EH6CA7's, but I see you got the EL34's. Yeah, those are on the bright side. Hell a pro like you can tweak the cap values to make these sound good. Love that output jack.

Hey Tubes,

Thanks! This amp sounds more early JCM 800, bu I have done some other thing to it to give it its own character. So if you roll-off the guitar volume it cleans right up and I modded the grid 3 connections. so if you back off the gain it sounds more like a Model 1959 as far as sounding Plexi not really. I am recording today so I will have samples later.

Well based on what I hear you say, I think you will be happier with the 6CA7's. I'm looking at another quad of double pan getter 6CA7's for $300. The price for used tubes has gone up sharply in the past several months. I have no idea of what is causing this.

Thank you Marty for the info! I have heard a lot of guys chirping about the EH 6CA7 with good thoughts.

Lemme guess...you were trying to get the tone from Black Dog by overdriving the input of it.

Re: MajorNut JCM 800 Build.

Here guys, here's a shitty demo of the amp we blew up one of my vintage SM57's recording this so the sound quality is crappy.
The recording is direct into the mixer direct into the tape no effects no nothing.

This is for crazy Jon

I'm just playing mate, I wouldn't insult you like that for true.

Well I really need to apologize for the sad playing, unfortunately I work on them better then I play them. But I will do some clips with humbuckers tomorrow. I went and bought a new SM57 today.
