Amp builds

I researching an amp to build and I'm searching for parts and I'm wondering if any here could help me figure out some things.

I'm looking at some chassis' right now from Weber. For example I'm looking at a chassis designated as 6M45 ~ which amp is that?

I'm a lot more familiar with the Fender designations and new to the Marshall builds and their designations.

Is there a web page/resource for some info?

Thats webers JTM45 clone. So google JTM45 and you will get a multitude of info. But for starters the JTM45 was the first Marshall amp and almost a copy of the early Fender Bassman amps.

Re: Amp builds

thanks for the info so far. I guess the JTM45 is not what I'm looking for.

I don't want a kit, however I am looking at a 50 watt plexi so I'm trying to figure out what the chassis designation is.

OK from what I can see, the 6M100 chassis is the one you want for a plexi style amp. You can get the blankoff plates from Weber to blank out two of the power valves if you wanna go with a 50 watt.

I had thought at first glance that the 6M50 would be the 50 watt plexi layout, but it's completely different from it.

The 6M45 is for a JTM45 amp with a "laydown" mains transformer. The 6M100 will have the "standup" style.

Wilder is right. but most of the plexi 50 watters had a laydown PT so you could use a metro jtm45 chassis with the jtm45 laydown PT and just tape off the 5 volt leads.

Yeah Metro doesn't just sell kits. They'll sell you all the parts individually as well, such as the chassis, transformers, circuit boards, even the board blanks and turrets so you can make your own layout as well, or you can get the board pre-made with the turrets already installed and with the correct Marshall layout.

Re: Amp builds

I love the face plate that goes to 11 on the metro site.

Thanks for the help.

I'm in the beginning stages of building 2 amps right now so this project would come after they are completed. Doing the research now since I've never built a Marshall type amp.

I was actually sort of a co-conspirator of the Metro 11 panels back in 2004 long before Metro offered them. I had asked George what the possibility of getting some made as a "one off" batch, and I had to order so many at a time in order for him to get them made. So I had him get a batch of them custom made for me, and a year later George started offering them as a regular store item.

However, as it turned out I spec'ed my batch of them wrong at the time and didn't realize it until I was watching Spinal Tap one day and realized I'd gotten them wrong. Only the volume knobs were numbered to 11 and they were numbered 1 3 5 7 9 11 instead of the correct 0 2 4 6 8 10 offset 11 on all the knobs. George's 11 panels are the correct layout.

For amp building supplies, you can't go wrong with MetroAmp. They're always a pleasure to deal with and they know their stuff when it comes to Marshalls.

Also, another place to check out is Watts Tube Audio for amp building supplies as well. I've never done business with them, but they seem to have a lot of stuff on their site.

I just ordered some supplies from Watts for the ones I'm working on now and it was good service from them and rather quick delivery too. I'm trying my hand at making my own boards so I ordered some supplies to finish putting them together.

1/8" G-10 is a pain in the butt to score/cut to size.
