Exclamation Got My TSL 100 back.... baddd sound

Hey

Got my Tsl back today and powered it up and nice clean channel... more volume than before ( had a shorted output tranny) switched over to the lead channel and nearly cryed haha

The tone was horrible it was really thin up until like volume 2/3 when a bit of bass started to kick in. as i turned it up it started to pick up strange noises/ interference... so i switched on my JCM800 and that was fine

Also there is volume at zero.... really thin fuzzy signal.

Put new power valves in (jj E34l) and sounded worse...

Are any of these problems linked to preamp tubes iv got these in:

jj ecc83s in v1 v2 v3 and a sovtek 12ax7wc in v4...

Help please... i miss this amp haha

Re: Got My TSL 100 back and......

Well I finally had to take two amps in. One is under warranty (Thank God) and the other is a TSL122. It was jumping (drifting) out of the correct bias range. I hope before I get it back, the tech checks it out in all three modes. He is supposed to be a great tube amp technician. Man I hope so.

I guess you get to call your guy up and ask, "WTF?"

I hope it gets rectified quickly and painlessly.

Re: Got My TSL 100 back.... baddd sound

I hate techs for reasons like this, they just do what they were told to, and ignore everything else. Unless they're a good tech.

My local tech took over a month just to discover that my amp wasn't liking the KT77's I put in (bad bias circuit or something, idk), and that he had to put some 6L6's in there. And when I got it back it had hum on Channel B.

But it only cost $170 ($130 for the tubes, $40 for a bias (He only charged me for a single bias and nothing else))

Re: Got My TSL 100 back.... baddd sound

bullseye!!!!

think iv sussed it out

a while ago i changed over 2 connectors by accident.... just changed them back over and sounded much better... so now im gonna change 2 of the pre amp valves to low noise electro harmonix and see if the background noise is reduced...

Also is it 100% safe to install the 10 henry choke (100ma) in place of R71???

My tech said the chokes he has seen in other marshalls are bigger and this choke may not be able to take the high amount of current passed though the anodes or something....

Any help on this much appreciated...

That's not bad. Usually you have to pay over $200 to get hum on channel B.

Re: Got My TSL 100 back.... baddd sound

Well I hope that you have figured out all of your problems before attempting a choke mod.

The choke (you have?) is one of the chokes designed for a 100 watt Marshall. However, there is a different choke for a JCM2000 and it is only 3 Henries at 100 mA. See:

Mercury Magnetics

Go to bottom of page, 100 watt chokes. I think the 3 Henries is the one you use in the TSL, but you can always contact Mercury Magnetics and ask one of their techs. The wrong choke can spell big trouble.

Re: Got My TSL 100 back.... baddd sound

ahh well too late haha

Iv installed the choke...reason being i saw a guy on you tube and he installed the mc10h in his jvm410h.... also iv seen a guy with a mc10h in his Jcm2000 on the web.

Anyway this choke is rated exactly the same as the mc10h and sounds beastly.... the bass is chunkier and amp is a little quieter.

also yeah the amp seems fine now... seems a little fizzy the distortion... but hey im comparing it to my 2203 which is real smooth... anyway im starting to really like this amp again

Il keep you posted on how it goes under full testing.

cheers guys!

Re: Got My TSL 100 back.... baddd sound

I'll make a note about the 10 Henries choke working in the TSL100. Glad it worked out.

Re: Got My TSL 100 back.... baddd sound

UPDATE:

Changed the bias on the e34L's from 85mv to 90 and the fizzyness has been reduced...

Just out of curiousity.... what is the best range of bias for these valves??

do they need a higher bias to perform well?

Also iv noticed the amp is getting a little hotter than useual.... seems to be on the left hand side... the output tranny is cold but the power tranny is hot and the front panel near the mains light is quite hot... a lot hotter than my 800

could this be a result of installing a 10H choke instead of the 3H choke???

Re: Got My TSL 100 back.... baddd sound

You might want to contact MM and ask them. The choke of course replaces a resistor in the power supply. The wrong choke value can cause the PWR tranny to get hot. It's best to see what MM has to say. They will know.
