Preamp and poweramp tubes. You might try a lower gain preamp tube. Give Eurotubes a call, they might have what your looking for.
Raise the bias (or lower it if it's too hot). Don't know the analogy on the 900, but I changed a capacitor for my treble bleed cap on my gain channel on my DSL and it really smoothed out my distortion. A few suggestions. |

I have a 4500, and I haven't used it in years for the same reasons. When it was all I had, and I had no choice, I got a graphic eq pedal (BOSS GE7), and put it in the effects loop, and raised the lower frequencies. Without the eq, it's got no bottom end at all. Put it in the loop, not "in front" of the amp.
I don't know how to smooth out the distortion, maybe different tubes, but I doubt it. EQ'ing some of the highs out, and raising the mids might help.
