SIR JCM 800 #34 replica

Hey everyone - I just finished my SIR #34 replica project, and it turned out pretty nice. Here are some pics of the amp and what I did to make it look just like Slash's JCM 800:

*Duct tape on right side - probably put there by Adam Day to cover the information that SIR had spray painted in order to track the rentals of the amp head.

**Top left sticker - Couldn't find much information about this sticker, and have to assume that Adam Day put it there for the 'Use Your Illusion' recording sessions. I believe it says "Max Recording - ?set" Question mark indicates unknown character.

***Front panel markings - I believe these markings in magic marker were put there by Adam Day to mark the optimum/max recording levels for the UYI sessions.

****Stencil on left side - "34" in two inch letters spray painted in white on left side of amp indicating what number the amp head was at SIR.

If you have any information regarding stickers or markings please let me know.

Cheers!

Re: SIR JCM 800 #34 replica

Modding the tone was the first thing I did to it. After playing it for about a year I figured if it’s gonna sound just like Slash’s amp (and it does), it might as well look just like Slash’s amp. It’s really an amazing sounding amp; if ya like Slash’s tone.

Re: SIR JCM 800 #34 replica

Good eye (unless you were kidding)...if you look at Slash's amp the top peice of duct tape is a different texture than the bottom two.

I'd love to make some sound clips, and I've been trying to record some for quite a while, but my iPhone doesn't do a very good job. I just purchased the iRig...anyone know if it will allow me to plug in and record with an external mic?

Check this out!

And I'm still trying to figure out a way to make some reasonably good recordings...

Re: SIR JCM 800 #34 replica

It turns out that I need an adapter for my microphone cable in order to plug it into my iPhone to make some recordings for everyone.

Hopefully I'll be able to record some clips tomorrow sometime. Keep your fingers crossed.

i don't believe that UYI and everything after that was recorded with an I-phone, to be honest
you put so much effort in trying to get the amp as you want it and now you want to record it by using such a device? is that doing justice to it?

Re: SIR JCM 800 #34 replica

So What mods are done to the amp? this amp I've never seen! not even in the 'welcome to the jungle video'. Almost as tragic as the sticky tape on Randy Rhoads' white quads. "Kids, this is what not to do to your amps". Next time save marshall some work and order the 'rough cut wooden box amp' before they nicely round the edges, sand it smooth, spray an even glue layer, glue down some tough black vinyl, smooth that off, attach some white piping (forget all that BS), then you slap your sticky tape and your little spray paint hand print (like a 2 year old) on the side. It's like the soldiers in WW2 going to the pyramids in egypt and scratching their name into the side walls, and useing the sphinx as target practice for their gun shooting?!?!

Well, since I don't have any other means of recording sound clips, what would you suggest?

I haven't been able to find any photos that show this new sticker in any detail. It showed up sometime during the Apocalyptic Love recording sessions. If you find out what it says, please let me know. As it stands right now my amp isn't much of a replica without it (or is it?).

Can you post some high-quality recordings (at least 24 bit, 96kHz - wav, not mp3) of how the duct tape sounded when you first applied it to the amp? That should calm any doubts about your "replica".

For those who may not understand the technical details involved here...
It is well known (and fully documented) that inferior-sounding duct tape can ruin an otherwise great amp!
