You're probably right...I bought the Tesla's a few years ago, and prices have been climbing ever higher.

EDIT: I looked it up, I bought the Tesla's back in the summer of '09. The EL-34's were $150 a quad, and the "L's" were $125 a quad!

check it out...

My faves:

1. =C= EL34
2. Ruby EL34BSTR
3. JJ KT77

The Ruby tubes sound great and are relatively cheap, especially compared to the =C= tubes. I would love to try the GT EL34M tubes at some time...

Is that the Terry Kilgore that used to play with David Lee Roth?

No rumor. He is that Terry Kilgore. He's hilarious. If you've never had any contact with him, he communicates in huge long ADHD-fueled paragraphs that don't contain a complete sentence.

Re: Who makes the best new EL34 tubes as of 2012

Well guys I decided to order a matched quad of JJ E34Ls (costed me $57.00 with free shipping).I'll still have these matched trio GT-EL34-Ms to use in my DSL 50 watt head,or to just compare to the winged Cs that are in it and the JJs that are coming. So I'll have a good variety to listen to and see what I like best. The tubes should be here mon. June 4th.Thanks again for all of your opinions they were the deciding factor in going with the E34Ls.

Just so you know, the JJ EL34LS tubes are not the same as the GT EL34LS tubes. JJs are a 25 watt tube, the GTs are a 30Watt tube. I just had a set of GT EL34LS tubes biased in my Marshall 1959 SLP and the tech said they were the beefiest tubes he has ever seen. He set the bias to 48mA and the tubes were wanting more.....

ok guys I found a match quad set of NOS Svetlana EL34 winged Cs for $143.50 .That seems like a good deal for some NOS tubes? What do you think compared to a matched quad of JJs EL34 for $61.35, a matched quad of JJ E34L for $57.00, a match quad ofGroove Tube GTEL34-M for 72.95 or a matched quad of the reissue Mullard EL34 XF2 for $82.75?
Get the Groove Tubes EL34M's. They sound the best out of all the tubes you mentioned and I have used them all. Plus they are reasonably priced too. The EL34M's are made by the Shuguang factory and they are shooting for the Mullard Dual Getter sound. The New Sensor Mullards sound pretty good, but they are very weak tubes and they are going for the Mullard Triple Getter sound. The JJ's sound horrible. Very harsh and dull sounding. The JJ's are a strong tube, but they will make a great amp sound less than great for sure. I yanked them out of my Splawn and my Marshall quickly each time I went cheap and tried some JJ's. You get what you pay for I guess. I still use JJ 12AX7's in my preamp. I am just no fan of their EL34's. The SED Winged C's would be my second choice though I have recently dumped them in favor of the Groove Tubes EL34M's. My YJM100 just loves those tubes. The Groove Tube Mullard wannabes and my Marshall YJM100 together gets THE sound we all know and love and have heard on hundreds of records. My amp has autobias so it is easy to swap power tubes and experiment. I put in some EL34M's with a power rating of 4 and biased them right around 37 or 38ma. My jaw hit the floor once I started playing.

I don't know what all the hype of groove tubes is... I was never impressed. I never liked JJ EL34's they're the same as their 12AX7's, dark and nothing that makes ya say "hey!" Gimmie Ruby's or EH's...heck Sovtek's sound better than JJ's those SED winged C's are great and last, and sound great in my 93 Marshall 1987 reissue.

There is only one Groove Tube product that gets a lot of love or "hype" that I am aware of, and that is their EL34M, which is their take on the classic FX2 Mullard Dual Getter EL34. SED Winged C's are one of the best sounding and built EL34's made today. I still prefer the sound of the Groove Tube EL34M's over any current production EL34 I have tried.

I have them in my jmp50. Think they΄re great.
I΄ve said this in another thread; I went and bought 4 Shuguangs for my Plexi build. Very low price and sounds great. Anyone else tried them?

Winged C and GTEL34M are the closest to a real EL34 sound to my ears.
However, I am old and grouchy. Don't play more than 3 gigs a week. My stash
of XF4 Mullards should last a while.
