Marshall MA100 Caps...Poop or not Poop?

I was in my local GC today and the guys asked me to look at an amp they had that was returned by a customer. I am not sure if was bought at another store and returned there...The amp cant be more than 6 moths old.

So I popped open the case and saw that one of the T630MA fuses was blown and a 22uF/160V cap had the electrolite leaked out and dried on the top.

I could not tell, but do the MA amps use Japanese caps or Chinese? I have repaired enough computer boards to recognize this synptom due to using cheaper Chinese caps.

Other than the caps, I thought the MA100 I looked at was descent (except for the very cheap case). From what I can tell, the build quality of the MA series is no better or worse than what I have seen with Laney GL100 heads.

The guy also said the store had a customer return 3 MA100s before he got one that did not come back - anyone else experience this?

Re: Marshall MA100 Caps...Poop or not Poop?

Very interesting thread. My guess is that these models are ran in batches of 6-12 at a time. Very well could be that one production batch is less than acceptable as the next could be on the Mark. I too would like to know as this has been the case before and not just with Marshall.

Re: Marshall MA100 Caps...Poop or not Poop?

As I said, I was very impressed with the quality of the chassis, board, wiring. Not like the poop I saw in a Chinese made AC100 head (which are pure shit to be avoided at all costs).

I nearly bought it on the spot at the broken amp price they shot to me, but I would have to fix it, retube, and then break even on what I would get.

The big divot on the MA head was the case looked like it was made out of particle board - but I have seen such cabinet quality on British Laney amps. I would guage the build quality at about 85% of my 2003 DSL head, and that is pretty good.

I cant speak for the transformers - as I did not look too close at them, but the board was well wired and built, the PCB was nice and did not look like the poop I have seen in midrange Fender amps (such as the Fender Hot Rod series).

So far, the worse amp I have ever worked on is a Vox AC100 head (made in China). I corrected the shitty factory wiring on two of the tubes, biased it, made sure it worked, and then told the guy I am refusing future work on it (not worth my time). Even the Peavey Windsor was built better....

Re: Marshall MA100 Caps...Poop or not Poop?

My newest amp is a 1999 Mesa Dual Rec Revision "G". Well Done Randall Smith. Then my amps go retro from there back to 1963 Leo Fender blonde Bassman. All amps are quality built. My son ahas a 2010 Blue Face Diezel V that is a work of art as well. No excuses for cheap ass workmanship when paying above $400 for any head from anywhere, No damned excuse. Just do not buy the POS!!!

NR

And yeah, I had a junk ass AC100 head. Wow.

The AC100 had cheap 24 guage-looking wires where the ends were just layed on the contact and then soldered where it happen to lay. Laney is guilty of that shit. What happens is solder flows underneath the wire and separates it from the contact.

My favorite built amp hands down is the Mesa Dual Rectos. I worked on a '90s DR and I was very impressed with it. I did not like the plastic PCB mounts that liked to pop off when you changed preamp tubes, but the build was so good I quickly forgave that.

I can say I love my Marshall DSL - I even looked at a Vintage Modern, but I need two channels and the JVM410 is too much stuff for me (I would not like to have to dive in and fix a JVM410 if I owned one).

I would like a brand-new DSL100 (minus that stupid induction kickback buffering capacitor on V8 of course).
