Re: my '79 JMP 2203 project

Well Greenbacks break up nicely with an amp like this. Helps warm things up.

Smashed what preamp and power tubes do you have in yours? You can warm it up some more with the right tubes if you find it harsh.

A cab/speaker can really help with harshness. Are your tubes fresh or old?

Re: my '79 JMP 2203 project

Ok I went back and read more and you have tubes in it that aren't old and were working fine in your DSL. There are 2 tube threads on the forum one power the other preamp if you ever want to fine tune it some more.

Re: my '79 JMP 2203 project

he is the best dog ever lol... I have jj preamp tubes in it, I haven't heard good things about those... power tubes are groove tubes (minus the one that crapped out on me, I swapped it with a good el34 with no label, I re-biased it afterwards and all is well)... I was thinking and i'll bet that one tube went bad when I dropped it about 5" onto the wood of my cab when I was taking it out of my DSL....

Re: my '79 JMP 2203 project

Here is my setup now, Huge difference! I guess having the cab
on top of the dresser was a bad idea, I was losing all kinds
of bass I didn't know was there! This is a more open area and I can play it with the MV past 3 and it doesn't kill my ears... night and day difference! I'll try to get a recording of it later....

It's still a little harsh, but much better!

Re: my '79 JMP 2203 project

thanks, I think I am going to do one more "preventive maintenance" thing to the amp... The big screen resistors(1000ohm 5 watt I think they are) look original and the rubber on them looks a little worn, they look like they have seen better days... going to swap them all out with new ones...

Re: my '79 JMP 2203 project

MV:3. preamp:7

Gibson Les Paul Special I brought back from the grave, 490R neck, 500T bridge. recording starts with neck pickup and I switch to bridge pickup along the way. Recorded with a Sony handheld so the quality is not the greatest, not sure if you can hear the difference or not... (sorry for the playing lol)

Re: my '79 JMP 2203 project

I just woke up. I work the graveyard shift so I sleep part of the day.

So you are hearing alot more lowend now compared to before? I say its time for a 412 loaded with GB's to go with that LP/amp combo.

Loved the Fairies Wear boots/Jack the Stripper. Love the SAbb's.

Do you have a boost pedal to hit the front end with? These amps respond to it so well. Using my EMG's I get great saturation and then roll off guitar volume for a more classic rock tone to a pretty decent clean. I have never had that guitar sound as good. EMG's aren't my thing but hey they are showing some dynamics with this amp. Still I prefer passives for a better range.

Marshall JMP 2203 after repairs, MV:3, preamp:7 - YouTube
A tube change could make it sound and feel a lil better too. You have all JJ ECC83S's in the preamp. They can make the amp sound a bit flat if used in all slots. I'd mix it up a bit. Come to the preamp thread and get some ideas if you have time. Power tubes can help warm and amp up and fight harshness too. It may not be night and day but it can have favorable results for sure. We're talk'n about JMP's on the preamp tube thread.LOL

Preamp Tubes? - Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How?

Power tubes?? Who, What, When Where how??

Re: my '79 JMP 2203 project

thanks, I'll check out the links. I'm pretty happy with it now, I'm sure I'll find a combination of things that will get me where I want, hell of a place to start I'm grinning from ear to ear. I'm a little confused where I want to go lol.. I like all kinds on rock, this thing nails AC/DC stuff pretty good as is I think.... After I get it back together I'll try to clean up my playing and post something somewhat worthy of it lmao....
Hard to focus on playing when you keep staring at the amp and wondering if it's gonna blow up,
I did allot of work to it, and being somewhat of a newbie I can't help but worry lol...

I just finished cleaning the cab up and gluing down/repairing the tolex, came out nice! soon as my resistors get here I'll put it all back together... I LOVE the look of those older cabs compared to the new ones....

That's funny you mention ACDC...I just got done playing some and I whole heartily concur! Hells Bells and Have a Drink on me. What's cool is I can get ACDC at half of my guitar volume and then run it up to thicken up the solo tone. Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have a pic of the finished cab?

Man all that matters is you're happy with the tone. No need to chase shit if you are there. You can always mess with it down the road. Congrats on all your work! Keep post'n clips. Love these amps and always happy to hear them in action.

Re: my '79 JMP 2203 project

I see that "real" tube screamers cost a fortune... so i went this route...

Tube Screamer TS-808 Handwired Clone | eBay
This is a handwired clone of the TS-808 Tube Screamer. Its a great sounding vintage, warm, analog overdrive.

The chip is the original JRC4558D. The pedal is wired true bypass. This circuit is the same as the original 808 circuit with one exception - its very slightly tweaked to allow more bass to come through. It can be powered by either a battery or a standard Boss style 9VDC power supply. I use quality parts, and my wiring is neat, please feel free to check my feedback.

I will let you know how it sounds...

It rocks, not sure the handheld recorder is doing it justice...

marshall jmp 2203 with tube screamer - YouTube

toggling back and forth between tube screamer, then all tube screamer at the end. It's like adding a "red" channel... MXR was never used, it's just in the pic...

Re: my '79 JMP 2203 project

Sounds much better then when you started, but there is still a bit of a "quack" sound for lack of a better term that I still hear from the very first vid you posted. Is it the camera maybe that is making that? You hear it in the beginning of your vids but it gets better as you play along and a bit of a feedback "horn" sound that sounds odd still.
That is why I posted the other JCM2203 vids cause I don't hear it in any of there vids.

Re: my '79 JMP 2203 project

I played with it some more and using it with my attenuator I can get some really nice sounding distortion at a much lower volume. should be great for practice. if you crank the amp up with this thing 3/4 or so you get nice metal tones! I'm a newbie, but very happy with it! I mixed it some with the mxr, but its a little much... the mxr is seriously weak compared to the tube screamer....
