If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

...it's not always a damn duck!

Why do people on this forum continue to insist on thinking this way? They pull the whole bogus logic of "perception is reality" when in reality there's a lot more to the story than what your mere imperfect perceptions tell you. Perceptions only capture a very small part of what is happening. When you rely only on perceptions only, it makes it very easy for people who are out to screw others over to "pull the wool over your eyes". Moreover, you will never understand what is really going on when problems arise with your gear if you continue to think in this fashion.

Try focusing more on what you're NOT seeing/hearing than what you ARE seeing/hearing. Lots may find that you just may get a bit farther with the whole "tone chasing" game than you are.

That applies to troubleshooting just as well as it does tone-chasing. Well stated, Jon.

The thing I like about the AFD100, is you can get a lot more "quack" in your tone.

Re: If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

Jon while i totally agree with you its part of the learning curve.....we say it all the time "i read it on the internet"....whats the best way to learn?......fall off the bike then try again...i'm no different in that i need to hear/feel/see it for myself....not everyone agrees with the teacher all the time...yet years later what do they do?.....just what the teacher taught them.....if they dont heed your advice so be it.....one day they will say "Wilder was dead on and i should have listened" ....the real learning curves happen when perception does not equal reality......i'm at the point when i speak from what i know and get my balls busted for posting it i just laugh .....i may be wrong every here and but in the end i can only offer what i know.....take it or leave it

If looks and walks like a duck, it's a duck. If it sounds like a duck being stepped on, it's a crumhorn.

If it walks like a duck.............then it's Angus Young

Oddly enough, while I was finding a Angus Young duck walk video (to throw some humor your way) I came across a clip where some fan threw some beer at Angus while he was doing the Bad Boy Boogie song. I hope AC/DC security put the boots to this guy.

Re: If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

I guess this all depends on what one's perception of a "duck" is.

Lots of people see a burnt component on a board and assume "Well, that component failed because it's a bad component. I'm gonna replace it with a "better" one". It failed like a bad resistor so it must be a bad resistor right?

Well wait a sec...did the concept of "underlying cause" ever cross your mind? Did you ever stop to think that the component failed due to something else going on in circuit? Of course not! Bad resistors fail and the resistor in your amp failed so the problem must be that it's a bad resistor right?

Let's take it a step further. Someone tells you that something is a bad idea or considered bad practice and you respond with "Well I've been doing it for this many years to this many amps and I've never had any problems so it must be OK". Well, going off of this logic, I guess it's OK for me to continue to run red lights because I've done it hundreds of times for 10 years and I've never had or caused any accidents right? Or even better...I'll recommend that others do it too because it's worked so well for me over the last 10 years...seems like a good idea right?
