New tube advice on JVM

Hey guys, I'm noticing my tone isn't as defined as I'd like it to be. I just bought a 2007 Marshall JVM 410H used from a guy in town. No footswitch or manual, 8/10 condition. Some scuffs here and there. But anyways, It sounds great and all but I'm playing it through my crate combo amp. I'm getting a Mesa 4x12 recto cab for this here real soon. It has the stock tubes in it. I play alot of Tool and Tool style music, I'm not looking for an exact Adam jones tone, but this amp has the mid bite I like. I'm looking for a little less shrill highs, a little more low end, and a little more mid pop. The gain gets a little fizzy at high registers. I'm thinking thats the piece of shit cab and also the tubes. What do you guys think, would 6l6/ kt77 or another tube combo do better?

Also what cabinets go well with the JVM. Thanks alot guys.

Re: New tube advice on JVM

JJ EL34L

JJ ECC83S but not the high gain. V2 - V4
a JAN GE 5751 in the PI (doesn't have to be balanced)
Tung Sol 12AX7 in V1.

You would ask for jjs' EL34L for the power tubes(the big ones)
Ask for JJ's ECC83S normal gain tubes in the second position thru the 4th position (Tube positions....V2-V4), put a JAN GE 5751 in the phase inverter position (make sure it is balanced) and a Tung Sol 12AX7 tube in the first position. (V1) Bring this to your amp tech, he will know exactly what to do. Setup will probably sound pretty good. I just go with good power tubes and swap out pre tubes until I like what I hear. You only have to bias the power tubes, so you can expirement with the pres' all you want.

Re: New tube advice on JVM

The KT77s sound antiseptic clean in the JVM probably due to the fact the JVM has the bare minimum plate voltage for them. So I went with JJ (Eurotubes) and three JJ ECC83S in standard gain (he has high gain as well but you're also going to want to tame the squealies of the amp).

Next, I went to a local shop, but you can go to www.kcanostubes.com and get a JAN GE 5751 -- these run $20 or so. It's a 12AX7 (ECC83S) pin arrangement with slightly about 70% of the gain of a ECC83. An old blues player's trick is to use one of these in place of one ECC83. I found it worked best in the phase inverter (that preamp tube right next to the power tubes). JJs tend to be dark, so you'll want a different tube for V1 or your input tube. I'd recommend a NOS Telefunken 12AX7 but that'll cost you an arm and a leg, so a Mullard reissue or a Tung Sol or just keep the stock white Marshall tube in there.

So if you look at the tubes from the back of the amp and go clockwise from the front of the amp (left to right) V1 (under the metal cap), V2, V3, V4 then in V5 (right next to the power tubes on the right) put the 5751.

If you're new to tubes I'd have the amp biased professionally. Have the power tubes biased to about 85 or wherever they settle if your tech uses an oscilloscope.

You might also want to join jvmforum.com. We have the designer of the JVM on that forum. He says the PI doesn't necessarily have to be balanced in the amp. Just close enough for government work.

Re: New tube advice on JVM

They're all variations on his and/or his family's names. (afaik)

JVM = James Victoria Marshall
JCM = James Charles Marshall
JMP = Jim Marshall Products

... then again I could be talking out my ass ... lol

These guys that responded sound like they know their business very well. I have yet to try various preamp tubes as they suggest, but it sounds like they are speaking from experience.

I own a TSL601 combo and just recently replaced the speaker and tubes. I used Tung-Sol EL34-B power tubes and Tung-Sol 12AX7 pre amp tubes. This really improved the sound. It balanced the sound very well. I ordered the tubes from thetubestore.com. They were very helpful and have some descent info on their site. I am going to try the JJ's from Eurotubes at some point. The speaker I used is a Celestion G12T-75. I suspect it will sound even better once it is broken in.

I bought my amp used also, and I went to the Marshall website and printed out a manual for it. You may be able to do the same, but I'm not positive.

IMO, definatly wouldn't replace the power tubes with 6L6's. I think it would change the Marshall sound too much. I don't know if these other guys would agree. Good luck.
