Re: Volume surge from OD to Clean

Very interesting. I hadn't notced it before, but I tried it myself and got the same result using my digitech delay with the 401.

When you switch from OD to clean, the delay still has a sample of the OD sound in it, that comes out during the first couple of seconds in the clean mode.

The send and return happen after the clean gain and OD gain, but before the OD volume and master volume. Also, there's a bit of lag in the amp changing over between modes.

I can't see an easy way to stop the effect, but it is dimished if you use generally higher OD channel volume and higher clean gain, with less master volume if required. That boosts the relative level of the clean channel at the point of the send/return, as compared to the OD level. Doing that, the level of that last sample of OD sound is less out of whack with the equivalent level coming through on clean.

What do you think?

cheers
John

And if the is an OD or distortion pedal in front of the amp that is on, it amplifies the surge sound. Mine has done it since new and my JCM900 4101 does it too, it's the worst with reverb turned up. Something to do with the relays Marshall uses to switch channels, there is a mod on the web where you change some caps on the relay circut, or cut some caps or something that is supposed to help. Both mine do it!! I have just learned to work around it over the years...like A+B with a Peavey classic 50 for my cleans and leave the Marshall on the dirty channel!!! Then I never have to switch

Re: Volume surge from OD to Clean

good to see my amp isnt broken!

unfortunately i think my amp sounds best master volume cranked and channel volumes kept down so when it switches over it gets LOUD! i was jamming once and i forgot it did that and i literally jumped haha

it is kind of a neat psychadelic sound for anyone thats into that
