TSL60 Tube Question.

Ok. I just bought a used TSL60 head. The thing just doesn't sound right and it's not near as loud as I would have expected it to be. i.e. I turned the Master up to 8- 10 with the Channel Volume anywhere between 5-6 and the Gain around 4-6. Didn't sound really thin or anything like the signal was fading it was just dull and I shouldn't be able to use those settings in my bedroom about 5 feet away.

I also looked in the back at the tubes and they weren't very bright. Just lit up at the top resembling a dimly lit candle. I hope I just need new tubes, but wanted to check here first for some opinions.

Could it be another problem?
If it's just the Tubes what should I get for replacements? If I swap them I want the best possible.
Also, how much do different tubes affect the overall sound of an amp?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me.

Re: TSL60 Tube Question.

If you are lucky, it could be a preamp tube if you have lost most of your volume. Pull them out, and clean the sockets with some contact cleaner and reseat the tubes and see if that makes a difference.

Re: TSL60 Tube Question.

hi, what cab are you using? your power tubes should be el34, your pre amp tubes should be ecc83, your bias should be checked and should be around 80mv.
these are the first things you need to check.

Re: TSL60 Tube Question.

Hey. I'm using an H&K 4x12 with Celestion Greenbacks. This cab does a fair job of smoothing out my Laney VC50 which is very sharp sounding through its stock speakers. What I mean is it sounds great through the cab.
I guess it's looking like I just need to get this to a tech and have it checked out. I mean I can almost bring out some sounds I like, it just seems that something is missing or is not quite right.
I sure hope it's nothing serious or expensive.

Thanks for the input!!!
