Thumbs up Favorite Amp Techs & Luthiers In YOUR Area...

Richmond area of Virginia, USA.

I had an electronics guy and a luthier I worked with for decades. Long story short - they are no longer with us. So I had to begin the hunt for a luthier and an amp tech in the Richmond area that I could rely upon for service that also did not break the bank every time I needed something done. I had no idea it would take months of searches; phone calls; word of mouth; and finally a little luck to find a couple of guys I could put my confidence in. One of whom is a member of this forum.

Now I know a lot of guys here do their own work, or are learning from members how to DIY. Not everyone does tho. I do some of my own guitar work (rewiring; refitting pots; tuners; etc.) but when it comes to fretwork, neck, or nut & bridge - I prefer a practiced hand (plus I'm a picky SOB); and I don't go inside amps anymore, except to swap tubes or speakers.

I am hoping you will post the techs you have had good experiences with in your area for others who come here to see. There are plenty of random listings here, along with the residents that offer so much good info - but not collected in one thread (that I have found). So, if you have some local proven guys you go to - please post location and contact info.

Here's mine for the Richmond, VA area:

Luthier: Jerry Ray
Contact: jrguitar@verizon.net
Basic Info: Specializes in restoring rare vintage collectible guitars. Bone nuts from carefully chosen stock (no prefab). Fretwork as polished and perfect as any I've ever played or seen. Turn around time is as good or better than his competition... and for standard work, around 25% less expensive. Great guy, too - no attitudes there! Sometimes good deals on interesting equipment come through his shop as well (that's where my JCM 800 4104 came from).

Amp Tech: American Viking (yes - one of our own!)
Contact: Marshall Amp Forum - View Profile: American Viking
Basic Info: Specializes in Marshall amps (but I expect with a schematic, he can handle others as well). Your amp won't disappear for 6 weeks or more like most the techs around town - in fact - if you're a player and the work is not too labor intensive, he will schedule a time for you to bring your amp in and get serviced on the spot (how sweet is that?)! He is also professional and friendly - plus he's happy to have you dime your amp and brutalize it before leaving... loud & proud (there's even a 4x12 cab right at his workbench). His bench charge is half of the best rate I could find here too.

I would like to mention that Richmond is home to Lindy Fralin, if you need your favorite pups rewound or want some sweet hand-wound or custom pups for your guitar or bass. He usually will shave a bit off the price for local walk-in musicians (please call before dropping by). Welcome to Lindy Fralin Pickups: How to Order the Finest Guitar Pickups Available Today!

Once you contact them, they will supply you with phone numbers and addresses. I prefer to not post that sort of info in open forums because of personal experience. I hope this will help out some other folks in my area. BTW, I have no affiliation with any of the above named techs, other than sheer appreciation for the work they do.

Now who are your favorite techs?
Cheers!

It would be nice if there was a list of good techs somewhere. Anybody know of anyone in the central Wisconsin area?

I don't know of anyone so the only thing I can do is take it to the local music store and then who knows where it's going to go or when it's coming back. I've been thinking of have a mod done to my DSL but have no idea where to have it done. And I'm not qualified to do it myself.

Re: Favorite Amp Techs & Luthiers In YOUR Area...

San Francisco/Bay area, California

i know a guy named Rob, and he runs a small operation called Precision Luthiery. he has worked on all of my guitars and i cannot praise him enough. he does all kinds of work. custom stuff, fretwork, setup, pickups, etc. personally, he has totally restored my danelectro(refret to jumbo, setup, installed one of those intonatable bridges, and made a custom bone nut) and he set up my Gibson Explorer for 10-60 strings, fret set and level, custom bone nut, and kill switch. prices are reasonable, return time is fast, and it is a great experience overall.

his email is ultisimo@yahoo.com

As far as I know, here is an incomplete list of people on this particular board that I know for sure do active Amp Tech work besides those already listed:

From West to East:
Jon Wilder - Northern California
JCMJMP - Central Canada (Ontario/Quebec) (Luthier work too)
Joey Voltage - New England (Massachusetts)
Lane Sparber - New York (NYC)
Major Nut - New Zealand????

I do know of others not on this board, and I'm sure there are others I left out.

The guy I go to to fix my guitars is Scott Lentz of Lentz guitars. He runs a shop in San Marcos. He builds guitars while his son does most of the guitar fixin. Great guys and very friendly. Lentzguitar.com

For amps, I take mine to Bob Gjika. He builds amps and knows his shit. His amps sound great too. Hell of a player. There are tons of guys in the So Cal area, but I don't know too many of them. ::::::::Burlington Guitar & Amp::::::::

Re: Favorite Amp Techs & Luthiers In YOUR Area...

Not too many amp guys where I'm at......Jon Wilder is probably the closest to me that I would trust. We do have two luthiers up here that do great work:

Redding Ca. Area
Rist Guitars, one of the original custom shops! Over 25 years in the heart of Hollywood, California
Roman Rist. MLP mainstay, custom work, beautiful stuff.

Home | Jason Z. Schroeder Guitars
Jason Schroeder. Local guy, worked on his house a few years back when he was just getting serious about custom builds. Big time now; did a guitar for Lindsey Buckingham. Absolutely gorgeous work. Totally nice guy.

Yeah you sure as hell don't wanna trust me. Just ask Wilder. My favorite Dielectric material is Skoal.

All kidding aside, work has been a bit slow lately. Lot of people calling, asking if I work on this amp, that amp. I say yes. They say awesome. Then they never come by. Fortunately I've got a 2204 that I've gutted and am rewiring with a JMP-style turret board and new caps to keep me *somewhat* busy.

In addition to all the great People we have here at the Board. In Detroit Area:

Luthier: Mike Koontz in Ferndale---Phenomenal !!!!

Amp tech: Dean Zink in Keego Harbor

Berkley is the Home of Bruce Egnater as well.

With our caliber of amp techs here at the forum I can get my small questions easily answered without a trip to the Tech.

BUT, I wouldn't trust My AXES to ANYONE other than Mike.

My favorite guitar tech in Seattle is a young lady named Dagna Barrera she runs her own shop called Silesia Guitars. She specializes in refrets and custom inlay work. She is also the bass player for Warrel Dane and slings merch for Nevermore \m/_

Re: Favorite Amp Techs & Luthiers In YOUR Area...

Bump! It's surprising how difficult it can sometimes be to find a tech nearby that knows his stuff - it's not always obvious by the phone book or by Google... and local music stores do not always share who 'the guy' is, since they want you to bring it to them and pay a mark up. Some of us have to really budget to get work done... so it needs to be done right - and affordable.

Please keep this thread alive for folks who visit that have not had luck in their/your area. Share your guru with the rest of us.

Thanks... and Cheers!

Re: Favorite Amp Techs & Luthiers In YOUR Area...

HELP!

Here in Northcentral Ohio the music stores send repairs out to either Stagecraft in Amherst ( the guy used to be good but is so burned out it took him a year to find a bad power tube socket in a JMP 50 ), or Empirical Sound in Cleveland who are so backed up you definitly need 2 amps.

So I'm learning to service my own stuff!

Re: Favorite Amp Techs & Luthiers In YOUR Area...

Lutheirs in the Central New York area that have had their names come to me recommended:

Harry Eibert, Rebecca Miller, Bob Macblane, and the guys at Ithaca Guitar Works.

I've had work done on my guitar by the guys at Sound Monkey Music and was more than satisfied.

Have had satisfactory amp work done at Speno's Music in Auburn and Voodoo Amps in Lansing. FJA MOds has been recommended to me more than once although I've yet to stop by...

I'm from State College, PA (center of the state), and the best amp tech around here is a guy named Dave Sarge. He works part time out of Rainbow music and is the head of the Electrical Engineering department at Penn State University and prior to that, worked as an amp designer at Mesa. The guy is a pure genius when it comes to amps, guys come here from all over the north east to see him.

In the East Central Ontario area...Wayne O'Connor of Hank to Hendrix. Don't expect to get anything quick...but he does the best work in the area and knows his guitars.

In Great Britain -

Amp Repairs -
Steve’s Amps - Great Service/price, knows his stuff.
or Marshall amplification. Milton Keynes is not that far from me.

Luthier - Charlie Chandler in Richmond - guitar-xperience.com/onlinestore/inde

Amazing service, and they have a plek machine. Plenty of experience, they have worked on guitars owned by Gary Moore, Jeff Beck, Clapton, Angus Young, James Taylor, Paul McCartney, Pete Townsend, Billy Gibbons and me.
