1959 SLP: Safe to remove C17 and C18?
Hi,
I want to get rid of the harsh brightness and aggressive volume increase between 1 and 1.2 on my 1959 SLP. Some sources claim that clipping the C17 and C18 caps will remove these problems. Does this mean i can desolder the two blue caps (4n7 and 2n0), and that's it? I'm pretty unexperienced with modifying any equipment (except effect pedals and guitars), so I don't want to destroy anything. If there's any other easy modifications that should be done to improve the overall sound, please tell me. Best wishes from Norway, Chris |

Re: 1959 SLP: Safe to remove C17 and C18?
Hi Chris and welcome to the forum.
I removed C-17 (470pF) and C-18 (2,2nF) in my `93 1959SLP. Removing 2,2nF has the biggest impact tonewise so just snipping one lead of C-18 may already be to ur liking. If not you can snip C-17 too. I said snipping because that makes it easier to bring back the amp stock. Other easy mods: - experiment with different preamp tubes (I like TungSol 12AX7 and NOS Philips GE 5751 after the C-17 & C-18 removal) - shared cathode V1 Less easy but highly recommendable: -installation of a decent Post Phase Inverter Master Volume (PPIMV) Good luck, PP |
