Help please with amp tone

Hi I am new here. I bought a Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 2 weeks ago because I am chasing a sound similar to Richie Sambora's. Like I said similar but not exact. However I can't seem to get a good tone coming. I play a USA Fender Standard Strat and a Peavey Wolfgang Standard straight through the amp. I also have a couple of BOSS pedals, DS1 and the OS2 but I still can't find a good tone.

I play the guitar through my tone port GT thing on my Mac and can get good sounds and then I transfer them to my Marshall and I guess due to the largeness of the amp it just doesn't sound anywhere near as good.

Maybe I am just missing something. I also have a 75 Fender Twin Reverb and I can get some killer blues tones out of that but I have never had nor ever played a Marshall before so all help is greatly appreciated.

Regards
MM

Re: Help please with amp tone

So if you put the exact settings in both the toneport interface, set to the JCM2000 model, and a real JCM2000- then they are supposed to sound the same?

Huh... this honestly never occurred to me. I've played around with amp modelling software. Not Line6, though. I've never had a real amp and the virtual model of the same amp side by side before.

So what settings did you try on the real JCM2000, and what was wrong with them?

Re: Help please with amp tone

Look online to see who produced the album of where the guitar tones sounded good to you. Then you'll find out how they captured his tones in the studio.

Re: Help please with amp tone

I found a setting last night that I really like. I am using my Boss DS1 as well

Settings are
EQ
Presence 7
Treble 7
Mids 4-5
Bass 5

Reverb 0 on both channels just now
Ultra Gain
Volume 1-2 (can't turn it up much louder than that)
Gain 9
Lead 1

Tone shift out and Deep out.

Then I punch it for solos with my DS1.

It does it for me just now

on the toneport it probably sounds a lot different due to wearing headphones. I don't know I am no expert. Thanks.
Gain 8-9

Re: Help please with amp tone

What speakers/cab and guitar are you using?

I hate the DS-1 pedal even modded. It colors the shit in a bad way and is just a lousy sounding gain. Glad you like it.

If I had my treble at 7 and the presence there too my ears would bleed. The amp sounds different from 3(volume knob)on up when you get the power tubes coming in. If you haven't had it there you won't even know what the amp sounds like yet.

Here is a biggy. Do you know when the amp last had a tube change? Just by your EQ settings I would give the amp a tube change. Your gain is at 9? No wonder the treble and presence are so high. Trying to compensate for all that flub from the high gain setting. Time for new preamp tubes and if it was me I'd do the power tubes too.

I prefer to hit the front end of mine for some punch and body. The gain from the amp itself even at volume just doesn't have enough balls/punch for me. I boost for a punchier gain. A Dano Transparent OD at $40 will handle all of that for you on the red channel.

As far as getting Richie's tone good luck. There are alot of tweeks made in the studio...

I'm sure you can get real close.

Hi,

Like I said I haven't had it long and I am still learning with it. I have no idea when it last had a service and it probably won't be for some time either as the day after I bought it I was made redundant at work so I can't afford to get anything done to it. I was planning to but oh well. Like I said as well I just want to get close to his tone and go from there. Thanks for the advice though I'll give it a try.

Re: Help please with amp tone

Well it took me a good amount of time to learn this amp and what it is capable of so don't be in a hurry. There are some definite things to try even if you can't purchase any thing else now. Put tubes and a boost pedal on your list and get to them when you can. Try some EQ adjustments.

One thing to remember is the amp will open up and the pre-gain will smooth out(become less fizzy)when volume is added. It will become fuller and require less gain dialed in because of that.(less than 9)

Re: Help please with amp tone

hey thanks for the tip, I was finally able to turn the amp up today and wow did it stink on those settings lol I turned the presence right down and it was much better. Still not as much gain as I thought but great all the same. Even got rid of the boss ds1. I need to get a longer guitar cable one day so I can get a much better feel for the full sound of the amp.

Cheers

I know what you mean about the gain or quality of it. The DSL loves to be punched in the front end. Guarantee you it will wamp with a bit of a kick. Some Marshall's don't need this but the DSL really pays off with one. Just on the Crunch channel alone with the right pedals you can have 3 different gains and a clean if done right.

Like I said I've spent alot of time with mine and there are things to do with this amp that create a healthy serving of Marshall tones. Tubes can definitely help. A good preamp combination of them will help the gain out.

Remember the Dano Transparent OD. $40 full of win for the red channel. Great anywhere. Do not ever think using a pedal is a handicap with this amp. Truth is they were made for each other IMO. May not be true with other models...

It will take quite a few test runs to get it where you want but there are some good tones to be had so try to prevail. Ears can be fickle too.

Gain 8-9
On My JCM2000 DSL 100
I am useing almost the same EQ settings , except my Presence is usually about 1.8 ..

Lead 1's gain is about 5
Classic on Crunch at about 8.
Everything elce pretty much the same...
Something I learned on my DSL very quickly,, the amp itself does not get very musical untill the volume is over 4 on either channel..
I think it takes about that much power to heat up the power tube section nicely.. GT EL-34L's
I may tweak my EQ settings a bit, depending on what cab I am useing.
2x12 with V30's or 4x12 with V30's..
Even to the room, or lack there of has an effect..
I myself have never used a Power Soak or Attenuator..
It may be somethint to think about.
I live in the country, in the same home my folks bought in 1952..
4 of my 6 neibors have basickly known me sence befor I started playing electrics in 1971..
Rock and Roll, & Blues and Country have been grandfathered into my Property Deed..
The biggest complaint , or one I have heard most often when playing ,, "Why did you quit?"
I police my own actions as not to play loud after 9:30-10:00 PM Here..
Or if one of them are haveing company or an event of some type..
Whats funny,, every part of your equipment has a definite effect on your tone..
Eric Johnson claims even the batterys he uses in his pedals.. :s
Alkaline or standard, new or pre broken in,, (Worn Down a Bit).
I havent gotten that far..
But theres probebly something to it..

I been listening to Robin Trowers new CD alot this week..
"What Lies Beneth"
Odd and courious...
He recorded 90-95% of the tracks with 5 , 18 and 20 watt amps.
He backed a couple of tracks with an 80 watt amp..
Yet he tours with a pair og Vintage Modrens, for reliability..
Go Figure..

Probebly some of his best work yet..
And goes IMO from Electric Ladyland, to old Cream, SRV and Bridge of Sighs...

To Samboras tones..
A couple of Majic Hands would help..
But as with most good artist, you may nail part of there tone,, but its a Whole Package ,,that makes it Smoak..
