Best low dollar OD for marshall

Looking to pick up a cheap od to mess around with boosting my jcm 900, just wondering which would work best because ive heard ts9s get too middy with marshalls.

Boss SD-1 & the Digitech Bad Monkey are both low cost favorites for use with Marshalls. My MIJ SD-1 is my go to OD pedal.

This. The Bad Monkey is a pretty decent pedal but, IMHO, the SD-1 is better.

I think Bad Monkeys are very good, and seperate bass and treble controls help you shape the tone

I have a newer SD-1 and I like it. It rides next to my OCD in the chain almost always.

My late 80s Boss DS-2 has made some great amps sound even better, although I haven't tried it on my 900 since I got it a couple of weeks ago. If you try one out, turn it to the turbo setting and put the distortion knob at about noon or 1:00.

Re: Best low dollar OD for marshall

hey i´m sort of in the same situation here i have a DSL100 and have to use the classic on cleans for some stuff, but i like to use the crunch for classic rock, however i have to change settings for gain and volume, so a pedal might be helpfull when i do have to use the clean and crunch type, if i don´t have to use the clean i go straigt into crunch but would like to have my options open

I have tryed to find some Guvnor or bluesbreaker (based on video reviews i´m sort of sold for those ones) where i usually shop online with no luck so i guess i´ll have to change to something else

comments that might make my search more focus on the available options?

Cheers

Re: Best low dollar OD for marshall

Dano Transparent Overdrive(CTO-1)= $40

Cheaper than the Bad Monkey and a more dynamic pedal. I have both. No mid hump.

morning Joe!!

Hey do you think it will help me with what i´m trying to acomplish?, i did not get if you were referring to the initial statement of the thread and or my question/response

I´ve read good things about this pedal on other threads here, and some have already thank you for the recomendation, the thing here is that for me is difficult to try stuff out, i basically purchase and then get to test things due to my limited options in country

This pedal rolls off between clean and crunch really well by adjusting your guitars volume pot. Another nice thing about this pedal is it makes the red channel sound fuller/ballzier too.

So you could have the crunch button in on the classic gain channel, set gain at 5 to 7 on the pot of the amp and then boost with the pedal. While playing like this just back off on the guitar volume till you get the clean you want. This pedal does a fine job of cleaning up this way.

I have talked to a few players that dig this pedal for blues and rock playing and old school metal. It will take the red channel into heavy easily.

$40 is a good deal and a small risk compared to many other higher priced pedals of which the Dano competes with IMO. Its my most usable OD across both channels of my Marshall and my Night Train.

Re: Best low dollar OD for marshall

I bought an sd-1 two days ago, i find that it works very well with my amp, but I also dont imagine ever turning it off now.lol I havent found an exact setting yet, but i notice that by just turning the input level up works best, gives it a very saturated tone also made me cut my treble back a bunch...so far so good

Hey joe thanks just the type of explanation i was looking for, it makes sense now to go out ant buy one and try it that way instead of spending more time in finding my own way do what other have and take it from there to experiment more!!!

That's the best way to use them, max the volume, keep the gain on zero or just above and set the tone to taste (I usually keep it midway). I run most OD pedals this way. It just pushes the amp over the top and gives you the amps natural crunch instead of the jar of wasps tone.

My HT Dual, Bad Monkey and Route 808 work like this. The Transparent Overdrive does not. It's volume maxed is too much. I run the volume at noon, treb/bass to taste and the gain from just a little to about noon depending what channel I'm boosting.

So there are exceptions but I agree from most of my OD's its the best way to thicken things up without coloring your amp's tone in a bad way. A simple example of this is using just a clean boost in front of your amp. I bet alot of guys who rely mostly on distortion pedals for gain don't realize how to mix in an OD pedal with an amp that's already break'n up on its own...

Re: Best low dollar OD for marshall

I use a TS-808 with my amps, including my Marshall clone. It rocks!

A lot of people like the Digitech Bad Monkey, never tried one though. The Boss SD-1 is always a winner, but it's pretty noisy. Could get one and buy a Monte Allums kit or send it off to Keeley to get modded. I hear the modded SD-1's are pretty choice.

SD-1 is not a OD.

Overdrives like a DOD 250, YJM308, and Tubescreamers work great.

The SD-1 is an OD. You are probably thinking about the DS-1 which is a distortion pedal.

Dude, the name of the pedal is Super Overdrive. WTF?

Moreover, the SD-1 circuit is incredibly similar to a TS-9. It's not had to make one the other and vice versa.

The SD-1 is a classic pedal with a classic sound. The OD-3 is Boss's attempt at repackaging the same ol' shit for more money. I'd get an SD-1 and mod it or have it modded if you want a real good pedal for chump change. Keeley and Analogman will mod your pedal for you, or if you can solder, you can get a Monte Allums kit for like $20.

I may get booed for saying this but I own a Guvnor and I'm not that thrilled with it. I rarely use it. My ts9 works well in just about everything else.
