Line 6 Relay G30 digital wireless, my review

I guess this is the right section to post this?, anyways here goes,

I got my Line 6 Relay G30 guitar wireless system a couple of weeks ago, it's a digital system and works in the 2.4GHZ range, here are my first impressions:

build quality: everything is plastic but seems pretty robust,
the transmitter is quite small and pretty tough, I like the fact that they put a standard 1/4" jack socket in the unit and not some proprietary socket that you've never seen before

the receiver is standard stomp box size, although I would want to keep this away from my size 10s, like I said this is pretty robust but plastic none the less, mine is mounted on a tray in my 19" rack, so not a problem for me

now for the operation of the system, dead simple, choose one of six channels on the transmitter and matching channel on the receiver and that's about it,

the sound:, well I have to say I'm completely blown away, I have been doing comparisons between my cable and the wireless system using different guitars and it sounds great My JVM410H approves

everything operates as it should, if I back off on the guitars volume control I can get the usual crunch on a distorted channel with my Marshall, turn up the volume knob and get the full distortion, this is something that just didn't work that well with my old Nady system, (I have also used Trantec and Samson systems in the past and they all sounded less than geat)

my only concern before I got the unit was, will there be any latency in the signal, being digital it takes time to encode the signal and decode it the other end, well I'm pleased to say it's spot on, I'm sure I read somewhere that they got the latency down to 4ms or something, because it's undetectable to me (4ms is equal to standing 2 feet from your cab)

I even put the receiver on a metal plate and put a metal saucepan over it and it still worked fine, very impressed

I got mine from Digital village £219 here in the UK, they were the best price when I ordered but the prices keep changing, so look around for the best deal

gotta hand it to Line 6, they did a great job with this unit, I would have liked it all to feel a little less lightweight, a bit more substantial, but for a couple of hundred quid, I'm not complaining,

the only drawback is that these new systems are not availabe in the USA, Line 6 already have digital systems in the US but I think they work in a more crowded waveband, 900mhz I think?,

anyway my coclusion is, the new Line 6 Relay G30 is easily the best sounding system that I have owned, so far no dropouts or interference at all, just kinda works as it shoud, can't say fairer than that

Re: Line 6 Relay G30 digital wireless, my review

decided to do a battery life test on the Line 6 G30 wireless system,

being a cheapskate I thought it best to test rechargeable batteries (who wants to keep buying new batteries eh)

I got the best rated rechargeable batteries that i could find, Energizer NiMH 2450mAh

well I have to say I'm very impressed with these batteries and the transmitter,
I plugged the output from my computer into the transmitter so that I could send a few hours of constant music through the system, turned on my Marshall so that I could hear the music coming through

with a freshly charged pair of the Energizer AAs, the transmitter lasted 8 1/2 hours until the red battery warning light came on, and another 45 minutes until it stopped transmitting,

I think that's long enough for any gig!

Re: Line 6 Relay G30 digital wireless, my review

I purchased the Line 6 x2 in fall of 2008. It works beautifully. I will have to try the rechargebales. My transmitter eats batties about every 5 hours. The X2's were one of if not the first to go digital in preparations to the digital air waves conversion that took place last year. Line 6 purchased X2 I think in Early 2009. The new wireless stuff is good. I have wondered if they plan to integrate the new wireless directly into one of there POD products?

Re: Line 6 Relay G30 digital wireless, my review

I absolutely can NOT wait for the G50 and G90 to come out, especially when hearing nothing but great things about the entry level g30! Ill definitely get both.. leave the g50 receiver on my "band practice pedal board" and the g90 in my rack when we play shows.. they both use the same transmitter too so no headaches there either.. I'll be able to switch guitars in a snap!

I'll definitely write a review when I get a hold of one,, hopefully both

yes I'm considering upgrading to the G90 when it's available, I can't imagine any other system sounding better

So how would you say the latency is over a reasonable distance? I mean no one is going to go into a field to play guitar but the g30 is 33 meters range or somthing doesnt it.. have you maxed out the distance on it, how was the latency on that? I bet the tone was consistent too eh

geez i cant wait for the newer ones

the latency between the transmitter and receiver doesn't change at all if you stand further away, the digital radio signal travels at the speed of light practically, the only latency in the wireless system is in the encoding and decoding of the digital signal, and at 4ms it's undetectable, like I said before 4ms is the equivalent time delay as standing another 2 feet from your cab

the only latency you would notice if you stand further away from your cab is between your speakers and your ears, due to the speed of sound, this would also happen if you were using a cable or any other system, it's just physics and can't be avoided

ooooooh i see, i didnt realize... i thought it was 4ms for every 2 feet.. thats why i choked a little bit lol misunderstood

im not too familiar with wireless systems specs and what not, and what i do know about them doesnt apply because ive used analog radio systems before.. all sucked
