Re: Anybody play Dimarzio pickups?
Yeah, I got one in the bridge of my Epi LP. Also have DiMarzio's Air Classic in the neck. They sound reeeaaallll good through my Marshall.

Re: Anybody play Dimarzio pickups?
Hi...I play Dimarzio in my Ibanez 770 and Fender Strat...you should give a try to the Super3 DP152 Dimarzio if you like the superdistortion
It has a little more midrange tone and less bass...sounds sweeter to me specially on a tube amp. The sounds on the Dimarzio web site are reflecting the character of their pickups quite well. |

Re: Anybody play Dimarzio pickups?
I have both in various guitars. I really like the Tone Zone, PAF Pro, PAF, VHPAF, and Humbucker From Hell. The Air Zone, and Fred are still being mulled over.

Re: Anybody play Dimarzio pickups?
Been using Super Distortions since the 1970s, love the crunch and it drives my Marshall into insane distortion. I still have some of my first pickups and they are over 30 years old and still sound great.
One of the first mods I ever made to a Les Paul was to have it routed for Dimarzios (was originally equipped with the mini buckers, 1977 LP Deluxe). Awesome pickups, but I have ordered some pickups from Stew Mac so I can expirement with my sound some more, I haven't made any changes to this Les Paul (97 Orville (Japanese Gibsons) 59 LP) in 11 years so I am getting the itch again. |

Re: Anybody play Dimarzio pickups?
I put a Fast Track II in the bridge on my squire strat as well a shielding the body cavity, flattening the bridge and changing the machine heads.
That guitars a real animal now and changing from neck PU to bridge is like stepping on a boost pedal, that FastTrack really screams!! DiMarzio rocks. ![]() |

Re: Anybody play Dimarzio pickups?
I currently have the Evolution in my bridge. It's great for rhythm, but I get a dry, weak tone for leads. I might be switching to Seymour Duncans to check them out. Which Duncans have you used?

Re: Anybody play Dimarzio pickups?
I've had quite a few pickups and Dimarzio isn't bad but the Super Distortion is my least favorite. They get muddier than high gain Seymour Duncan's and EMG's. I also noticed they get a kind of video gamish type of tone for really fast lead work which I wasn't fond of. My favorite Dimarzio is the Evolution but I've decided to stick w/EMG's.

Re: Anybody play Dimarzio pickups?
I've got 'em. HB's in a LesPaul and one SC in a Strat.
When I bought my LesPaul (used) it had a mid-70's Super Distortion at the bridge, and the stock PU at the neck. I always thought it was a bit too dark & muddy. I always had to turn the presence way up to compensate. And you could never play it totally clean, it was so hot it would OD all the time. Dimarzio had just come out with the "Super II". Designed to be brighter & not as hot (intended as a "neck" companion for the regular SDHB). I bought one, but what I did was install it at the bridge. And it was just what I was looking for. Still not 100% clean, but very clear with just a nice edge. With distortion it's chunky with a nice clear bite. And depending on whatever amp/effects im using, if it gets too trebly, I just roll-off the tone knob and then it sounds like any other hot HB. But it really sounds GREAT with warm tube amps. As for the old Super1, you know what?... I cut-out one coil and installed it at the neck. It sounds great that way...like a hot P90. Much better than the stock HB. Everyone likes the tone, but cant figure how im getting it, cause it still looks like a just an old Dimarzio. LOL On my Strat, I have a Super Distortion Single Coil (SDSC) It's a stacked humbucker, that sits on the floor of the PU chamber, and actually bulges the pickgard up a bit. You see, I was looking for a single coil that sounded like a HB when on distortion, without having to change the 3-SC appearance. A few aftermarket SC's come close but not really. But the Dimarzio SDSC actually does it. With distortion it sounds like a an actual hot HB and clean it sounds like a warm SC. BUT there are two serious drawbacks: 1- It's extremely noisey. When played clean, it's not too bad, but with distortion, you MUST keep playing and loudly. As long as you're on it, it sounds great, but for any quieter passages where you have to back-off, your gonna hear the worst 60cycle hum of your life. Durning the quiet parts of "warpigs", between the power chords, I had to constanly turn the volume knob all the way down....very annoying. 2- It ruins the #2 switch setting. It over-powers the middle PU. No more cool out-of-phase funky duck-quack tone, no that's gone! Instead you get a thin-shrill-metallic sound. Almost unusable, except for maybe some Industrial/alternative/proto-grundge or experimental stuff. Im going to take it out and try Either a Duncan QuarterPounder or a JB Jr. Just haven gotten around to it yet. |

Re: Anybody play Dimarzio pickups?
I went the swap out the EMGs route because of the "high output muddiness". I put Duncan passives in (JB/'59). That particular instrument just reflected everything back. Roll off the volume knob until it cleans up. The Duncan Blackout in my Alexi is very high output but has a fuller sound than the EMGs and I like the Blackout sound much better. Solution? Roll off volume knob 1/8 turn. Gibson SG with the stock 498T? No issue at all.
Also look into the Duncan Mustaine Livewires. Nice sound.

Re: Anybody play Dimarzio pickups?
I'm a Dimarzio fan myself, my Ibanez RG1570 has an Evo2 in the bridge (much, much nicer than the standard Evo, IMO), an hs-3 in the middle (really nice noiseless strat tone), and a FRED in the neck (a little too trebly to use in the neck really, but I hate muddy neck pickups)

Re: Anybody play Dimarzio pickups?
My main guitar is an Ibanez PGM 301 which comes with 2 Dimarzio Paf Pro (Neck /Bridge) and a Jem single coil. I have had other Dimarzio's e.g. Tone zone, HS2 etc and can't fault them in any way.
