What kind of OD/Distortion?

Well, for the guys who use some boost/OD/Distortion, what kind of boxes?

For my part, I ruled out distortion pedals, overdrive is more than enough for me. In the search for that just little extra kick in my JCM800 rear I went through several pedals: MT-2, DS-1: these two just don't work for me, DOD 808 Malmsteen: really cool pedal but favors treble too much for my liking, SD-1: kinda cool but tends to sound buzzy IMO, ProCo Rat: great pedal, sounds great for Stoner/Doom, not the sound I was after at the time, and finally the one I'm sticking to, a late 70's/early 80's japanese Boss OD-1, the same kind Jake E Lee used back in the Ozzy/Badlands days.
It's a two button deal but ranges from Blues to Heavy Metal, it blends so well with my JCM800 you'd swear they were made for one another!

So, let's see what you're using!

I have tried a loooooooooooooooooooooot of pedals and my favourites are:

- Blues: Marshall Guv'nor (the old black one and made in England). I love it with my Les Paul.

- Other music: Japanese Boss DS-1. This is the one I use more. Taiwanese ones are not so good and also own a Keeley ds-1 but don't like it so much as a stock japanese ds-1

I made good experience with a TS 808 especially for playing leadlines. The TS 808 smoothens the sound of the JCM800 due to its more even harmonics and adds enough gain.

i used to use the gain on my mk 2 master volume as my main overdrive
with a dean markley overlord (similar to tube works) with its volume turned way down for my rhythm sound so when i turned the pedal off i got pure marshall lead sound which worked well untill my overlord died ..........

nowadays i use less pre amp gain and more distortion boxes my second overlord pedal , digitech pds 1550 and/or big muff and . i dont feel limited even with my one channel amp i can get a load of sounds .

at the end of the day i it depends on taste so pass the salt and pepper.

oh and i second the jap ds-1 i used to have one but left it at rehersall so i bought a new one and ive never used it as it since , its simply not the same pedal

Throbak ODB (Colorsound Overdriver clone)
or
Crowther Hot Cake
or
Jacques Mercer Box (when using Stratocaster)

With my JCM 800 been using a DS-1 w/Keeley ultra mod (set for a nice and warm distortion)and an OS-2 (set with more bite) Works nice depending on what type of boost I'm wanting for solos.

Hi all,

For me, I've found nothing better than an ol' Si Fuzz Face and my 1987X is one of the sweetest tones I've had the pleasure to play with in my 13 yrs. of jamming.

I also run a TS808 when I want a slight grainy sound and that I love.

I really love, not as much as my Fuzz Face, but close... is my BK Butler Tube Driver through my Marshall, man that is some sweet overdrive there!

i use to run through a ts9 overdrive but than i moved up to a big muff but now that i have my marshall i find i dont really need one due to the awsome distortion the thing puts out.

i use a TS9dx with my JCM800. I set it to Turbo, no gain, maximum level and tone. I love the way in wich it pushes the tubes, however i haven't tryed anything else. I was thinking of getting a turbo rat, which has a higher output level that other Rat pedals. I seek boosting capabilities rather than distortion, anyone used the turbo rat?

Been using a Zvex Box Of Rock as of late, and it's the best yet with my Marshalls.

Re: What kind of OD/Distortion?

G2D Custom Overdrive.... The most amp sounding overdrive I have ever tried. Made in NZ, very transparent. Has a boost switch. Set the amp to clean and use the pedal for the overdrive and lead sounds.

Re: What kind of OD/Distortion?

I use the typical Boss SD-1 with my DSL and am happy with it. I'm into hard rock and blues.

+1 on the SD-1.
Good little pedal that. I get a good 70s Black Sabbath tone with mine.

Re: What kind of OD/Distortion?

Another Boss DS1 over here, though mine is made in Taiwan. It's not bad, but it's not fantastic. However, given the price I paid, I'm more than happy with the performance I get out of it.

Digitech Bad Monkey. I really like that you can control the bass.

Tim/Timmy which will take your stock Marshall into overdrive nirvana! Takes whatever stock quality tone and makes it better and has neutral eq. Check the comments on any forum and you'll see what I'm talking about!

Re: What kind of OD/Distortion?

I use the Zakk Wylde MXR overdrive through my JCM900 and it works very well as a solo boost or a blues overdrive on a clean channel. It is a pretty mild overdrive even though it is for Zakk Wylde.

Re: What kind of OD/Distortion?

My favorite overdrive is a Fulltone Full Drive 2. Its a 2 button deal with the best OD i've heard come out of a stompbox on one side the the other switch is a volume boost. pretty sweet.

Re: What kind of OD/Distortion?

If I'm not useing a Tubescreamer 808 clone pedal, TS-808 reissue, Maxon OD-808, Digitek Bad Monkey, or Cusack Screamer.
I'm useing a Boss type overdrive. A MIJ Boss SD-1 or a modded Boss OD-3 I got off of eBay. I was told that it was modded by a previous owner and not sure how it was modded but it sounds incrediable! It might be one of those Monte Allums mods.

Re: What kind of OD/Distortion?

I've got both the Boss DS-1 and the Digitech Grunge. The latter is really warm and produces some lovely feedback modulations.

Re: What kind of OD/Distortion?

I switch between a Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face and a BK Butler Tube Driver. If the amp is clean, i combine both pedals with a Keeley DS-1 for more punch. This gives me a very flexible setup.

Re: What kind of OD/Distortion?

i have a fulltone ocd and an mxr distortion III. i play through a jvm410 so it already has a ton of gain as well! i use the ocd like a boost pedal and it stays on 95% of the time even w/ the high gain settings on the jvm to thicken up the sound a bit. the mxr i use on the cleaner channels for a different flavor!

right on....that is one of my fav pedals.....

depends on what I am going for....I find one set up works great for a certain pedal; where as, another set up does not.....I just got a zvex fuzz factor and have been playing around with that...not for the tame though
