Re: Dedicated overdrive/clean boost your Marshall thread.

Anybody try this one? Looks cool, like the "fat" feature (bottom-end boost) and clean boost capability, and the ability to blend the mix of each, as well as an overall level of both. Local guy has one for sale:

It gets high marks. I have never heard or tried one but from the reviews it sounds like it thickens things up without killing tone. Love the name.

Nice. I'd grab it in a second, from this local guy; he's got it at about 1/2 price, but I'm a little tapped out re. guitar purchases, right now.

Ah, it hurts to let these deals pass by...

(Different semi-local guy had one up for sale, as well... hard to get away from home, for a 2.5-hour drive, for a pedal, though... arrrgh. LOL)

Don't know about this one. Billy gets some nice tones though no doubt. Did he use this on an already overdriven side of an amp or through the clean side?

Not sure, I know he's been seen with SIX of them on his pedalboard, each with a different setting.

Yeah, my patience for 2hr+ movies has really waned in the last while. It's such a commitment to doing only one thing, and if it ain't that great, you're SOL. You could be playing guitar the whole time!

Re: Dedicated overdrive/clean boost your Marshall thread.

I hear ya guys about movies. They are a crap shoot.
Alot of times i find myself wanting that 2 hours of my life back.

In the search for a overdrive when i got my dsl50 (which has been sold for over 2 years now,i will have another one,oh yes) The first one i tried was a sd-1 and it hit the nail on the head first try. Right now i use 2, at seperate times of course With it's asymmetrical clipping for me it's the perfect overdrive. I have never got to try a ts-9 or 808. From what i understand about those is they have symmetrical clipping which a tube amp rarely emits per robert keeley.
I use a keeley and a stock sd-1 well i say stock but it will now have a chipsocket in it for changing out the opamp chips. I did tell the person doing the mod to save the stock chip.
Oh and there changing the led to a yellow-green one.
But for me sd-1 hands down stock or modded.

How do you like your Keeley compared to the stock? I had a Keeley DS1 Ultra Mod that I liked at first but didn't after a few months of having it. Felt it was more of the pedal though. You know, like you can't polish a turd kind of thing. Safe to say I quit liking it. I still have my MT2 Twilight mod. You know it actually sounds good on the crunch channel of my DSL. Crazy!

I almost got an SD-1 from Keeley at one time but changed my mine and got the DS-1 instead. Shoulda went the other way.

Re: Dedicated overdrive/clean boost your Marshall thread.

The keeley has it's own thing going on. More tube like i guess would be the word for it. If you don't have a stock sd-1 you need to get one. $40 bucks brand new which is steal and i suggest trying this first before paying about $50 to $70 for an mij. But to me stock sd-1 is awesome with a dsl and so is the keeley. From what i hear the mij's sound warmer due to component aging. I'll test this out when i get my 83 sd-1 next week.

The twilight mod sounds neat and you tune in some cool stuff i'm sure with the parametric tone knobs.

I have never tried a ds-1 but have heard that through the years they have changed them so much that alot of years sound different. Too confusing for me. The sd-1 has remained unchanged since it was brought out in 81.

Re: Dedicated overdrive/clean boost your Marshall thread.

I found another boost/overdrive pedal that is nothing short of awesome. But you have to put the time into it to get the right tone. It's an HAO Rumble Mod. 100% true bypass has a toggle switch to toggle between boost and drive, a color knob that acts backwards to a tone knob where as the color the more you turn it the more the bass..it is quite spectacular

I've been wanting to get an LTD by Barber for awhile now. I decided it would be my next pedal then I would get whatever after that. Look what Barber has come up with now:

I kinda like the look of those Blackstar HT tube boost pedals, they have the full high voltage thing too. I wouldn't mind trying one through my amp, I'd like a nice clean tube boost (900 already has enough solid state for me)

Anyone had any experience with one?

I've got the HT Dual. You can actually roll 12Ax7's in it. I use it on my Crunch Channel only with the amps gain on 5(knob). I like the green side of the pedal best. The clean with volume maxed and gain noon on up with EQ set to taste. Makes a great boost to midgain or lower stuff.

The Crunch activated on the pedal is what I like best. I like to run the volume at 3 O'clock and then the gain again from Ten O'clock on up. It can get heavy just with the crunch setting of the pedal. It stays really articulate on solos and chording is pretty clear as well. I find this pedal sounds best with it's volume up to about 3 O'clock and then gain wherever.

The red side of the pedal paired with my DSL's Crunch Channel doesn't work well. It really comes out woofy and then when I tame the pedal it comes off pretty dull. I haven't tried it paired with just a clean channel. It may do better there.

Its $200. There are cheaper pedals I use more so even though its a nice sounding pedal I would go for something else. Now this is the practical side of me talking so take it or leave it hehe. Most of the feedback I've read from other users are positive with their set ups.

Re: Dedicated overdrive/clean boost your Marshall thread.

Barber's got some killer pedals...

Pedals go so well with the crunch channel of a DSL. The Small Fry is suppose to sound even better at stage volume where alot of pedals sound worse the louder you get. This has tones according to the reviews I've read and I hear good things in the clip too.

Its a good'n. I used mine alot with my Marshall until I got the CTO-1. Both these pedals are great for the price and to me hold their own against more expensive offerings.

Re: Dedicated overdrive/clean boost your Marshall thread.

Man, just picked up a used Keeley Java Boost the other day - I freakin' LOVE it! Got the original, plain silver/metal one.

It's basically a germanium boost, modeled after the old Rangemaster treble boost (used a lot by Gibbons, Iommi, Clapton, May), even has a NOS Mullard OC44 transistor, like the original Dallas unit. Has a selector to choose full, treble (classic Rangemaster), or mid boost, and a tone knob.

Man, does this thing smoke! Puts out a seriously badass snarl for leads, really nasty, and I'm getting some of the most Billy Gibbons-like sounds I've ever had - wicked pedal!

Love the tones of those player's and if that gets you there then hell yeah! I opted for the Homebrew Germania but I got the version without the OC44 chip cause the guy that makes them said they were really close in sound. I was skimp'n change too hehe. I heard some nice clips with the Keeley. I like these pedals especially for that mid cocked snarl they give.

Awesome TS! Enjoy the snarlz...

He pretty much lost me with the tongue thing right off the bat though to be honest.
