Tone check: Boss Metal Zone but which guitar?
I picked up a Metal Zone the other day. It was only $20, which is a no-brainer. I'll buy pedals all day for $20. Anyway, I recorded a sucky clip last night. Guitar --> EP Booster --> Metal Zone --> Vintage Modern --> Sennheiser E609 mic --> Mic Preamp/Digital Interface --> Garage Band. I didn't even know what I was going to play when I hit record, and this is what came out. A little too much bass, but not bad for a completely dry recording.
Boss Metal Zone Demo.mp3 See if you can guess which guitar. I'll give a 12AX7 tube to the first person who gets it right. ![]() A: 1980's Kramer Focus 6000 (ESP) B: 2006 Gibson Les Paul 1958 RI C: Fender MIM Standard Stratocaster D: Heartfield by Fender Talon II |

I used to live and die by that pedal but can't stand using it now. Used it mostly on my Fender Strat and my Jackson. Everything sounds so compressed. Its a good entry pedal or for SS but sounds rank on my tube driven amps.

Re: Tone check: Boss Metal Zone but which guitar?
And you guessed correctly
![]() Damn, I thought it would be harder than that. That's the new Super 55 Split Coil Fender pickups, and the bridge pickup at that. I've NEVER been excited about the tone of a Fender Strat bridge pickup before, but these, yeah, they work. I wish I'd gotten the set of 3 in the first place. I bought the bridge pickup at Guitar Center Memphis a few weeks ago, and had to have the others. They work really well with whatever you're doing. Back off the gain and it sounds like a strat. Kick in the Metal Zone and it sounds like a brutal humbucker. About the only thing they won't do is that out-of-phase thin Strat sound unless you take the pickguard off and reverse the connector. I'm going to put a push-pull pot in to reverse the pickup wiring on the middle pickup. That'll make this the absolute most versatile guitar I own. To everybody who picked the Kramer, good guess. That pink pickup is a DP151 PAF Pro, which naturally has that half-cocked wah sound like the Strat setup in the clip. It's all about the Brown Sound. I'm really happy with that guitar too, although I wish it didn't have the single-coils. Where else can you find an ESP for $300? Jason, shoot me a PM with your mailing address and I'll get your prize on its way. |

Re: Tone check: Boss Metal Zone but which guitar?
Actually most of the gain is coming from the amp and the EP Booster. I had the distortion knob on the Metal Zone almost all the way off. I like it for its mid-shaping controls and the low end you can dial in. I guess I'm using it more like a notch filter or parametric EQ than a distortion pedal.

Re: Tone check: Boss Metal Zone but which guitar?
I like this demo because it shows how just one piece of equipment can render other gear "faceless" After listening to the clip and looking at the guitars (even knowing the answer was the Strat) I still couldn't hear much resemblance toward it and it could have been recorded with any of those guitars!
I'm a 100% Strat player too by the way if that counts for anything. Reminds me of a demo I have on Youtube. Some guy wrote "the tone is thin, you should use heavier strings" I wrote "I'm using 12's man!" and he replied "oh right, sorry!" I was using 9's. A quick tweak of a pedals eq would change the tone dramatically and I'd be "feeling" the heavier strings more than they would make a difference to "tone" Fatness possibly, but tone, not in my opinion. |

Re: Tone check: Boss Metal Zone but which guitar?
![]() I recorded this just messing around. I'm not playing much with the hand thing going on, just trying to stay limber until I get something done, but that was discussed already. This is just a little different sound with the same pedals, mic, amp and guitar. I added a couple of mini toggle switches to the Strat, so this clip is recorded using all 3 pickups with the middle one wired out of phase. I'm still using the unmodded Metal Zone. I hope the mods smooth out the distortion... it's a little buzzy. Anyway, the ending was the only think that sounded halfway decent so that's what you get. Listen quickly... ending.mp3 |
