convert wah pedal to volume pedal?

Can it be done? I have a cry baby that just sits unused. I don't like the sweep, can't find any sweet spots on it. I could really have sometimes with a volume pedal though. Is it possible? Or am I just wasting my time? Should i just trade it for a volume pedal?

Re: convert wah pedal to volume pedal?

Totally possible and pretty simple. I'd imagine you could find a tutorial online for this.

Really just need to bypass the filter, possibly replace the pot/rheostat that's controlled by the treadle mechanism and run the output of that pot/rheostat directly to the pedal's output...

perhaps not as simple as trading your wah for a V pedal though

Maybe easier though depending on where you live.

Re: convert wah pedal to volume pedal?

I figured it wouldn't be very complicated, its a bit like swapping out a tone pot for a volume pot right? That's more of less what a wah pedal is, isn't it? Just a "tone knob" with an extremely wide sweep. Ill poke around the web for some videos, and search some classifieds to see if anybody would like to trade. Thanks brp. More input from anybody is greatly appreciated!

Well, it's not quite THAT simple, more or less but actually more BUT on the other hand still very little. A wah is a type of filter and so is a "tone pot" on a guitar but that's where the similarity ends..
But a tone pot just attenuates highs. A wah sweeps between a frequency spectrum and accentuates or amplifies a portion of that spectrum, so there is a filter and amplification circuit, while a tone pot just has a single capacitor to "cut" AKA attenuate the highs in the frequency spectrum.
So it's not as simple as replacing the volume pot with a tone pot... but depending on the model of wah, it may just be as simple as bypassing the filtering circuit and running the input of the wah directly to the pot and then directly out to the output jack, without having to swap the pot at all, again, depending on the model.

SIMPLY PUT: You can in fact gut the wah, put a volume pot in place of the pot that's in there (again, you MAY actually be able to use the existing pot, although more than likely not as it's value is selected to control the wah's sweep through the frequency spectrum not to attenuate the signal) and that's it, IN to a volume pot, OUT to the out jack.

But you'll need the right value of "volume pot". Now, what value is that? Well, find the specs for a replacement pot for any standard volume pedal and Bob's your uncle.

Re: convert wah pedal to volume pedal?

thanks vintage, thats actually exactly what i need. so unless i misread that, all it takes is undoing one connection and it wil function as a volume pedal? i don't want to use it as a switchable way-volume pedal, so the i shouldn't have to compromise on the sweep. as long as it can go from normal signal to mute, thats fine with me.

i have a dunlop crybaby, non-adjustable sweep. not sure of the exact model, as my bass player gave it to me for free, but i can check when I'm at home if its relevant.

this could be interesting, only thing I've ever modded was my guitars. pretty comfortable with a soldering iron though, so it should be easy enough if i even need to use one.

Notice that it says it's NOT a very usable mod.
However, if you DON'T need it to go to complete silence, it may be perfect.
If you do need it to go to complete silence, gutting and using a different pot is the way to go.
Alot of people don't really need a vol. pedal that goes to complete silence, just give them a range from full volume to lesser volume.

Re: convert wah pedal to volume pedal?

Thanks brp, so I will for sure have to replace the pot? That's fine, i figured i would need to do that from the start. As long as I don't have to like, rewire anything it should still be fairly simple right?

Re: convert wah pedal to volume pedal?

i did it once by accident, If you have a red phasel inductor in the wah then it can be done, Basically you have to put solder it in a diagnol sort of shape. If you can a picture of the wah i can photoshop and show you how!

Would a wah have enough....ummmm...sweep ...if thats the right word?

Those EB volume pedals are great cause they have the big range.
