Mini Humbuckers vs P90's

How would you guys describe the difference between these two types of pickups?

Does the mini humbucker have more chug and bottom end? And the P90 have bite and zing? Or are they pretty similar?

P-90 and minis are completely different. The P-90 has better growl and with the right one better chug. Coil design of the two is the biggest factor.

Re: Mini Humbuckers vs P90's

Would there ever be an application for picking a mini humbucker equipped guitar over P90 equipped one?

Never in my mind. The routs can and often are the same from what I have come across. But those are limited of corse. If you want a monster p-90 I would strongly suggest a Wolfetone meaner 90. Absolutely amazing p-90.

Re: Mini Humbuckers vs P90's

They are like a regular humbucker with less output and a brighter more single coil like high end. They can chug but with high gain amps the DiMarzio P90 Super Distortion I have in my SG squeals a bit. They don't like my wah or my wah doesn't like them. I finally finished up my Rat clone so the next project for my soldering gun is to restore the original Gibson P-90.

Nice axe Alvis. My 1969 Goldtop had P90's. I love them. A little noisey, but I still love them.

Re: Mini Humbuckers vs P90's

Pete Townsend played Les Paul's with mini humbucker's.

I play Junior's, Standards and used to play a LP Deluxe with mini's. Compared to a Standard with burstbuckers, I'd characterize the Juniors as being a lot brighter. It's been a few years since I played the mini's but I always liked the tone. Plus if you play places where 60 cycle hum is an issue, you'll do better with the mini's.

Re: Mini Humbuckers vs P90's

Pete also played SGs with P90s. I've been quite impressed with the Dimarzio humbucking P90s, and a big plus is the 4 wire flexibility for series/parallel/split wiring. I'm also a big fan of mini humbuckers (particularly Firebird style)...

I play in loud, heavy, alternative rock band. I currently play a telecaster and was looking for something to beef up my sound a little. I was considering an Epiphone Wilshire 66 reissue or a Gibson Melody Maker.
