Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
Only one out of that list I like is the SD-1. Mine is made in Japan, black label with NEC 4558 chip and I changed out all the electrolytics for new ones. Made a big difference.
I'd like to get a second one to mod it with a 47nf cap accross D4. Some people say it smooths it out. |

Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
The Keeley double stack SD-1 worked nicely, I have the VM now, no pedals needed. :-)

Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
MIJ SD-1 is a really great pedal, but the MIT's suck IMHO, they are a lot noisier, and they lack output level, for instance:
if you plan to use your SD-1 as a booster for an already overdriven tube-amp and dont want the diodes in the pedal to clip the signal, but the tubes in your amp. Then you turn down the gain, and crank the Level, but the thing is, the output isn't enough to drive your valves into saturation. |

Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
have you guys had a chance to play a modded ds1 , they are a very underated pedal.
in stock trim , they are terrible at best !!!! i call them a "orange door stop" but when the right mods are done they can sound awsome IMO !!.. |

Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
i've got MT2 modded by Moho Mods. Very cool box. They correct the mids eq section so it can be more powerful and crunchy instead of before it's very squelchy. I have an original MT2 and the first on, the Heavy Metal pedal, i've lined them up with all the same settings and the modded one crushed.
The DS1 ain't bad but Moho and Analog Man can mod these to sound much better. don't go for the metal core pedal, cause metal core is not cool...

no, it helps to play louder if you wan't more saturation. the thing with boosting the way i explained is that you can get more distortion out of your amp, it's the earliest attempts at "clean boosting". this method will be like having another channel on your amp with more gain and a tad bit more volume. depending on how hard you are pushing your amp, the difference might not be all that great. hope that gave you the answers you where looking for. |

Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
Oh okay, I get what you're saying. I was thinking that if you had the amp's volume at lets say 4 without any boost and then kicked on the boost that it would simply have more power driving the preamp tubes into saturation without affecting the power tube circuit (aka without adding more volume). but I realize the error of my statement, I forgot that the desireable tube saturation that tube amp owners love comes from saturation of the POWER TUBES and not the preamp tubes. (I never can get mine loud enough to appreciate or understand what thats like)

Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
I never liked the DS-1. I bought one back in the 80's. It was my 1st pedal. I kept it sooo long but never really used it. I kept it simply because it was my first pedal. One day, I just decided to sell it.

Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
I've got a stock SD-1 and love it. In this context I really must add the BD-2, which is the best overdrive from Boss IMO.

Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
Love my SD-1...use it to drive my solos. Really love it now since some really smart dude from Canada gave me a sweet mod for it. All the difference in the world and it stacks up against my OCD. Actually don't know which one I like better now.

Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
...but don't any of you guys get the most terrible noise when you put more than one pedal in line. I am using the NS-2 noise suppressor which cuts the signal as soon as it reaches a preset level. I got myself a PB-100 now and think I'll stick the pedals on ebay!

Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
If I could jump in here, I have an SD-1 it's a good pedal i really like it...but I find when I punch it, SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (off.......) (on) SHHHHHHHHHHHH! it drives me nuts! but I like the tone I get from it...
the main problem I have is I play a lot of quick pauses and my foot is just not fast enough and I end up sounding like shit does anyone here know of any mods that can at least make the SHHHHHHHHHH! a little less?
