Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
I used a stock DS-1 for years. At bedroom level, it's great to practice with, but at gig volumes, it sounds WAY too harsh. So, once I started gigging more, I started using more TS type pedals for overdrive.
True that the MIJ versions are better. The newer MIT pedals are made with ipod parts...or so it seems. I have been working closely with George over at pedalworx Pedalworx on designing a ds-1 MIJ clone with a few tweaks. I got the first prototype a couple months ago. We're still tweaking, but I will let you guys know when it's complete if you are interested. |

Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
I kinda compare Boss pedals to your first girlfriend.
Easy to get a hold of. Get ya where you need to go, look kinda good, sound decent, built ok....until you find that hot little boutique pedal that sounds awesome looks really cool, high dollar......then leaves you high and dry on a gig one night and you find yourself calling your old girlfriend and..... thats why I have so many boss pedals in my board now. They sound ok. The japanese ones are much better than the new ones. Not too expensive......but I am always looking to replace them, well not the tuner.

Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
I tried out a new DS-1 through a fender deville set to clean and it was horrible.
I then figured out that it sounds better when you use it on top of an overdriven sound. But through a clean channel its a big NO NO. Id like to hear one modded... but im happy with my tube-screamer

Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
I have the Eternity pedal and I was disappointed with it. Mine is the Black box version. There are alot of different versions of this pedal. I wanted to like it but some of my other pedals really showed it up so I knew it wasn't just me screwing the mix up.

Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
I've got the Keeley Modded MT2 Twilight Zone mod. It actually sounds good on the crunch channel of my DSL. The mods help the pedal out. I hardly ever use it though. Usually for shits and giggles now that I'm not after heavier tones. Its a once in a while pedal hehe.

Re: Boss Distortion / Overdrive Pedals
My SD-1 modded. My BD-2 modded, and both sounding very good in their own ways. Got the OD-3 which sounded very good stock, but still sent away for modifications. Why? Because Boss are good sounding, affordable pedals and get even better with minor modifications. If you (like me) pay someone to do the mods, they're still a lot cheaper than most boutique pedals.
