Sonic maximizers

I just got a new BBE 882 sonic maximizer, it boosts my lows and cleared up my signal but my question is how? what exactly do they do.

I'm not familiar with BBE gear, but it might be acting as a buffer. Maybe someone who knows for sure can chip in.
