Got my first distortion pedal ever today...

I wanted more distortion so I got an Ibanez DS7 today. This is the first pedal I have ever bought; I have always gotten as much distortion as possible from amp alone, but lately been looking at some foot pedal demos and could really tell a difference when one is used.

I am having a rough time getting a good tone. It either sounds like the amp is in a closet under a heap of clothes or there is so much treble, it feels like its shredding my ear drums (not in a good way). My amp is a Marshall MG50DFX. I'm playing the amp on the clean channel, trying to dial in the bass, mid, treble and reverb to get a deep, rich tone. I get that sounding OK, but then when I turn up the LEVEL knob on the pedal, all the depth goes away. Thank you in advance for any help in settings. Guitar is an Ibanez RG350MDX.

Here are my current settings.

PEDAL:
DRIVE 10
TONE 9
LEVEL 1

AMP (CLEAN CHANNEL):
GAIN 10
BASS 5
MIDDLE 4
TREBLE 10

AMP ONBOARD EFFECTS:
CHORUS/DELAY 6
REVERB 6
MASTER VOLUME 1.75

Re: Got my first distortion pedal ever today...

G'day klopper,
Some fx don't work so well with some amps. Did you try it out with the same amp in the store when you bought it? Did you try any other stomp boxes before you purchased the DS7?
Some fx can take a bit of tweaking to dail in. Keep trying!
I have never used a DS7, but I notice you have the drive on 10. None of my OD/distortion pedals sound much good past 6,7 or 8. Try backing the drive off a bit.
Good luck.

Three I'd recommend above all else:

Ibanez TS808 including the reissue.
Bixonic Expandora
Boss 'Fender 59 Bassman'

All three in my collection and used live through the clean channel.
