Where should I put my delay?
I'm using a dsl-401 and the effects loops is weak as hell, unlike in my old amp where it was as clear as the standard input.
The manual tells me I should only use rack effects in the loop, I'm guessing because you can boost their output. My boss dd-3 delay is pretty much inaudbile when using the loop but when I use it infront of the amp I get an odd clashing sound, presumably from the uneffected guitar signal clashing with the delay echos (although that's just my guess) I've got my effect in the following order: Guitar-->Wah--->SD-1 Overdrive--->DD3 Delay-->DSL401 Is the problem caused by the order of the chain? Should I put the delay straight after the guitar, or at least between the wah and the overdrive? Any help would be totally useful, thanks. |

Re: Where should I put my delay?
You might want to try to put the delay first in line as you feed the delay with distorted sound or wah sound as it is now. Either way I find rack delays in the loop more efficient than stompboxes if you have many different effects on the floor.

Re: Where should I put my delay?
I always think: what is it that I want to be effected....do I want the delays to be distroted or do I want the distrotion to be delayed....dig
I think there are really only a couple of rules....one dealing with lose of tone due to non true bypass boxes and also wha issues in regrad to distotion boxes...but overall I belive it to be up to choice and how you want it to sound

Re: Where should I put my delay?
Wah > Compressor > Pitch Shifter/Octaver > Envelope Follower/Auto Wah > Overdrive >
Distortion > Fuzz > Phaser/Flanger > Equalization > Chorus > Delay & Echo > Reverb > Looper > Tuner > Line Booster/Conditionner but some people place the Fuzz before the overdrive/distortion and the EQ is to be experimented... |

or example if I wanted to say bring out the auto wha then I might compress it after...at least that is what I would think in my mind...also since the auto wha is based on the attack, I would think that you would not want to compress the attack first unless you find that allows you to control the auto wha better... also I would think in many cases you would want to chours the delays to make them sound more distant.... I am not trying to be critical just trying to understand where you are coming from...maybe my thoughts about the matter need to be adjusted... thank you

Re: Where should I put my delay?
St. Bede has a point. I've always been told (and I'm old) that you want to run the compressor after your wah since it helps balance out volume differences that can occur. My setup is:
morley wah>dyna comp>Boss DS-1 (dis)>Boss>SD-1 (OD)>Boss CH-1 (chorus)>EH Pulsar (tremolo) However, I also know that there are no hard and fast rules for how you setup you effects. Whatever gets the sound you want is best for you. Just curious as St Bede is since I always like to learn new things. (40 is not too old to learn) Valcian - while I don't use a delay myself, it sounds like you have your effects in the "proper" order. However, as mentioned above...switch them around and mess with different orders to see what happens. You may come up with a sound you like better. Also, just try messing with the settings on the pedal itself. Maybe you're running it too hard. Personally, I think less is better when it comes to effects such as delay, chorus, and tremolo. You want just enough to enhance you sound. Personal opinions only...there are much better tone gurus hangin around this site than me. Hope it works for you. cheers, Pete PS-I also own a DSL 401 and have never had luck using the effects loop. I also run my effects straight in the front. |
