Share settings? MXR M-108 10 band EQ

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago and can't believe the difference it makes. I would really like to see what settings others use to get various tones like Slash, Van Halen, Hendrix, Trower, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Guns and Roses, etc.....I'm not sure it sounds better in my effects loop or in front of the amp. A lot of experimenting lies ahead. On another note, I can't get my strat to give me that liquid rich tone of Slash's first lead riff in Paradise City. Perhaps the strat can't make the Les Paul neck or neck/bridge mix "woman tone". Maybe it's something else? Thanking you in advance.

Re: Share settings? MXR M-108 10 band EQ

It depends on what frequencies you want to boost or cut. For a slash type of tone you need a mid-boost. wich means an upside down smiley mouth, something like this:

10 ..................-.....................
.................-..........-..............
...............-................-............
...........-..................................
.........-.......................... -.......
0 ... -................................. -...
..............................................
..............................................
..............................................
..............................................
-10 ........................................

It didn't without the dots, sorry for that, the stripes are the positions for four knobs. Makeing this patter kook me a lot of time BTW.

SRV, Trower, Hendrix, and EVH didn't used an EQ. So there are no settings for that, just udo what sounds the best for you.

I'll bet it did!! Thanks. I have a lot of experimenting to do. On my JCM900 post, I stated that I think I like the MXR in front of the effects more than in the loop--not sure without more testing. I'll try the boosted mids. Any idea what tone a smile would be like ie. scooped mids?? Trying to get a feel for what players different shapes sound like.

I edited the hard work of lespaulmarshall to look like my settings haha

I'm not really trying to sound like anyone, but when I got my 900 I kinda complained about not much bottom end. So I boost the first 4 to about the +5 or +6 range and the rest look pretty similar to that diagram. No cutting, just a low boost with a bump in the mids and cascade the rest back to 0

I've found that really tightens up my low and and thumps out the mutes, but I still get enough voice to cut through a mix.

Agreed on the low end especially with my strat. I bumped up the lows a good bit as well.

It will give you boosted mids, it will give you a Slash type of tone.

there is a big misconception here. The EQ DOES NOT change the TIMBRE of an instrument. No way to get a humbucker tone with EQ from a single coil.
EQ is to create tone, just to shape it as final touch. The best place to put EQ is after the mic, as mic positioning inlfluences the sound a lot.

Agreed! A Strat isn't a Les Paul and a single coil isn't a humbucker. I think I need another guitar in the arsenal.
I hope this doesn't get out of hand like my stereo system!!!
