Probably the one effect I've never had any interest in, but I have a relative who's birthday is coming up and he's been gassing hard for a good quality phaser.

Mind you, he has Strymon and T.C. stuff on his board, so...
anyone know of a really good phaser for a guy that's into Gilmour/Pink Floyd?

Gotta be the MXR phase 90. I prefer the script version myself over the block version.

Place it in front of a wah in front of the amp set to a moderately fast sweep when the guitar is loud enough to get consistent feedback and you will have a revelation.

    Right on guys....thanks!!!!

    Quick part 2 now...
how different are the Small Stone and Phase 90?

Do either have any volume drop issues when engaged?

Or for that price, should I just buy both and let him decide?

Haven't tried it yet, but the newer Phase 95 has a button for Phase 45 mode and Script mode. BOING! Might want to go that route.

I have the phase 45 and I like it, I can't compare to the EVH phaser or any others but the two buttons give you a lot of flavours to choose from. Good price too if I remember correctly. I don't use it a lot, I prefer flange...

I'd suggest you to try Source Audio's pedal called Orbital modulator.
It is relatively inexpensive and you will find great effects on that little unit.

Another MXR fan here, using their Phase 99 pedal (same DNA as the 90 but with a few nifty extra features and a "vintage" mode).

Maybe decide on what kind of phaser he would prefer, 2 stage (phase 45, subtle, used a lot in Floyd like music,), or 4 stage (phase 90, more intense, funky stuff).

Some phasers can do both, and are more versatile, like the mad professor one. But the phase 90 is like the Marshall/fender of phasers, has been in so many records.

I had a chance to compare a block to a script Phase 90. The script version was creamier and less distorted, but if you want the effect to be more pronounced, go with block. I ended up getting the script, but liked both, as each had its strengths.
