It’s pretty much a Marshall 18w circuit so not that hard to fix/source parts for, it’s a pain in the neck getting the board out though!

IMHO No Amp in that range of wattage is better than the Hiwatt. Only different. Some may prefer a JTM/JMP circuit, while some may like a Fender AB763, Tweed.
But for 30w, or less, and getting a Hiwatt Voicing?? Hi Tone..... 18w Hi Tone x 2 Hi Tone Dr-F, or if you want the Early Gilmour sound, the Hi Tone Cresendo A 150w.
The DR-F won best Fane Purple 75w Repro 5 years in a row at HiWatt shootouts.

    At 38w..I know 8w over.
Id get Valvestorm to build a Metro Spec, LTD ED JTM45/GMP Head. Real KT66s
    Valvestorm 18w Marshall Head
    SpeedShop 6L6 Tweed Deluxe

If it was me though, Id have Valvestorm buid a JTM45/100 with Mustards, PEC pots. Real KT66s.

Under 30Watts.....I love my Vox AC30-HW, but its every bit as loud as my 50 or 100W Marshalls.

I always swore I would never play a vox, kids teacher made me borrow his for a gig and I had to get one.

One of the best 18W amps out there are the Dr Z Maz Jr NR 18s. Unbelievable sounding amps with great construction and loud as hell also, no problem keeping up with a drummer at all. Head or combo...all good!

    2c...

Depends on what you are trying to achieve so I'll throw in my favs.

VHT special 6, vox AC4TV. I was tossing up between them, dunno maybe 9 years ago ? both were new out and they just stood out from everything else. If you think 5w isn't enough then buy 2. Get a 2x12 or 4x12 and wire it stereo and run a head into each side. Plenty loudness....

I bought the AC4TV 10" combo because one came up s/h at a good price. I could sell it easy for the same money or more. Personally I prefer the sound of a 12". The volume knob is really a gain knob and the attenuator switch is where you dial volume. Not much headroom. Sounds ok on 2.5 watts, not so much on .25w.

The VHT is a champ with a more complex preamp and more treble in the voicing so it sounds more "british". Point to point so good for modding. The ultra 6 has an extra gain stage. I'm not into hi gain amps so...

Building from scratch I love the 12ax7 version of the GA-5 without feedback. Build it as a head and run it into a 4x12. 1 knob to rule them all... :D

But all these have little clean headroom so unless you like classic distortion...If you are looking at hiwatt I assume you want headroom so...

In the up to 30 watt class, the 18 watt Marshall model 1973 stands alone in my book. Tone for days.

Second pick: Mesa/Boogie Blue Angel. 15 watts if using only the 6V6 tubes, full up adding the EL84s it reaches 33 watts, close enough. It is a very sweet, responsive amp with a singing liquid tone that should please just about anybody.

Use 3 low wattage amps playing out regularly.
Mesa Boogie Subway Rocket 1/10 combo 20 Watts. The very best grab and go small amp I have ever owned overall. HUGE sounding miced and can get amazing tones at a whisper if needed. Live clip miced super low stage level no effects other than verb in the loop.

My Zinky Blue Velvet 25 watt 1/12 combo. Absolutely KILLER little amp Bruce built me in 2008. Live no effects other than the wah in the front a little delay and is unmiced here.

PRS MT 15. HUGE sounding fluid modern sounding amp. Amazing cleans with very high headroom and LOUD as HELL! Runs pair of 6L6's at low grid voltage for 15 watts but sounds more like a 50 watter. Would take the PRS over the Rocker 30 as looked at both and played them head to head bought the PRS because it just sounded better to me and the fact that it as 1/2 the $ of the Orange didn't hurt!!

In no particular order, I'll have to say:

    Marshall Studio Classic
    PRS MT15
    Friedman Runt 20
    Mesa Blue Angel

I've owned 3/4 and the MT 15 is my go to every time I pick up my guitar after pickup swaps.

    Just me humble opinion

I haven't read the entire 5 pages of the thread but I have a Supro Black Magick that's really good. 20 watts. Loud and clear or dirty. Really nice tremolo.

Besides my 1 watt anniversary JTM and JMP, I've got a tweed Blues Junior with the Jensen C12-N that is a great little amp. I'm probably going to spring for a 1974X next month.
