Metallica has evolved & grown [matured] as a band. They may have started out in Rebellion as the "anti-establishment" band but they got to a point that they wanted to grow & stick with what works. They are one of the hardest working bands to ever play and im grateful to their contributions to the music world.
FWIW they have recorded some of the heaviest riffs ever ...

They also became adults and realized all the juvenile rebellion BS was exactly that and started to focus on the business of being a band for their own sake.

Still a Boogie in spirit though! James core tone is Mesa blended with a Diezel model.

I think they really wanted to stay true to not being seen as commercial but when you are making killer cd's doing sold out shows, selling tons of killer cd's, having people everywhere calling up radio stations requesting your songs, becoming "commercial" is unavoidable. When you get to this point the money just follows, and if you have good management they are going to exploit this in your favor as much as possible.

The worst thing they could have done was follow Slayer's lead of making the same boring album over and over again and never evolving as a band.

Check out Jame's Mark IIC+ lurking in the background. Legend has it, a Mark is also the secret to Slash tone on the AFD album.

When people say Slash tone they typically mean AFD tone and a lot of them don't know who's playing what on the album, most assume if there's a guitar playin' it's gotta be Slash even if it's really Iggy.

First time I have heard this rumor. Here's an interesting article on the two Marshall's Slash used on Appetite For Destruction. There are two parts to the story.
