I can tell by the waveform that clip two is the least compressed. I'm not sure if you were using compression or if it's the natural compression of the amps. In this clip, I'd agree #2 sounded best and again, it looks the least compressed. I own a SV20.

I agree, we "could" have dialed them all in to sound "the best". But the reason we didn't, is because that is very subjective, also. One person is going to like more gain, the next goes for a cleaner tone with clearer sounding chords, the next guy likes a fatter tone, etc etc. Even the people that were there during the recording, would not have been able to agree on what was 'best". We didn't even all agree on which of the amps sounded the best, with them set up similarly.

Sacalait-I recorded all the amps using SM 57's into (Scarlett 18i20) Studio One with no compression or EQ added.

We did do about 3 re takes total. The SV20C had to much bass on the initial recording so we re did that quickly.
Also re did the SC20H after the first take as we didn't like something with the tones. Really wanted to try a number of ideas Walsh had suggested.
I hope we can do all those in a future recording.

Thanks to our engineer friend (Jeff) he really helped out.

I will add to what zenlink said, the only modification that was done to any of the recordings, was to change the volume of the clips to try to get them all to match. I don't recall which were adjusted, or if it even matters, but I think one wasn't quite as loud as the others. Again, thanks everyone for helping to make a great thread.

Don’t let one clip make your decision, the Jcm800 Studio is a little beast!! :thumb:

It sure is! I wish the clip had come out a little better on that one, because it sounded the best to me. And I could have easily dialed in more treble, I had it down pretty low on the amp.

I'm not trying to crap on your guys effort, just my observations.

I did make these clips. These are w/ Steve Jones (Marshall) playing trough the SC20 & the SV20:

    SC20:

    SV20:

    note: (both amp's)
    1st section dry
2nd section reverb (edit) actually delay, not reverb
3rd section reverb (edit) actually delay, not reverb & boost

I should have added, my recordings aren't perfect either. I recorded them using a Zoom H2n, sitting on the stage, just right of camera position in the image shown on the files (& below)...

That's the actual set up, of both amp's, sitting side-by-side...

It's not thread crapping when you are actually adding additional info to the thread. :dude:
Both sound awesome, but the SV20 sounds better to my ears. Also, it sounds like more than reverb added in the 2nd part, maybe some delay also? Great playing and tone, but the SV20 stands out here.

    Agree
but i suspect the gain is higher than the master
If the Master is around 7 and gain on 6, it gets in the ballpark of a plexi the sc20 (I Think)

Are the stacks in the background the fake ones that guitar center uses?

They are all the real deal, the ones that Sweetwater gets after the show & sells them as b-stock (display units), so Marshall doesn't have to haul them back to the UK...

maybe it was delay only... That's probably it. Although, he uses a wah, at the end of the JCM800 clip...

since you have both sv20h and sc 20h to compare, how do they differ in terms of feel? I only have master vol amps .I hear that the nmv amps are more dynamic and feel totally different.
