I did a quick test on each of the speakers in my 1960 A Vintage Quad box.
I tried to get the mic in the same position on each speaker (right in the middle straight at the dust cap) There was a big difference between the four speakers.
There is about seven seconds of each speaker at the start here.

I chose the best two to record and as you see I couldn't help myself again.
Before I finished doing anything properly I was off recording, playing around as usual.

    Try this test:
On a 4x12 place mic at about 2 - 3 inches off center of dust cap and check to see if it sounds different on either side of the cap.

I am thinking if I have time, to do the same thing again and see if the results change. The test went a bit longer than this but think I stepped on a delay pedal while moving the mic around and had a slap back delay happening. Funny thing is I can't remember setting this kind of delay so maybe I caught my horrible room acoustics in one of the setups.
I will try either side of the cone like you said as well.
