Yup. Hetfeld called it the "magical marshall" jmp 2203 modded by Jose that he used. Kirt used boogies. Unfortunately hetfields magical marshall mysterious disappear after ride the lightning. Master of puppets was all boogie.

Did you ever get your hands on a Proco Rat? I had good results with it very quickly to get passable Metallica tone.

I did! The store that serviced my amp had one in stock. It's a great pedal in my opinion, more versatile than I expected. The one thing I've noticed is that at times it sounds like it's sitting on top of the amp instead of being a part of it. All in all I'm satisfied. I'm getting some good early thrash tones from it.

It sounds a lot bigger in person, which definitely helps. What would you suggest to make it closer to RTL?

RTL, to me, is heavier and deeper than what one Marshall can do on its own..you're close enough though, i think, your tone is a little ''warmer'', its a good tone.

Ride The Lightning is Dirty Fingers pickup > Tubscreamer > stock JCM800. Dirty Fingers are VERY important to the sound because they're very high output

Using a Marshall JCM800 4210 (2205 circuit), I could nail the RTL sound pretty easily. Not so easy with my DSL50, 2204 or JMP 1987.

It's all in the scoop. Bass 10, Mids 0, Treble 10. They used this setting through ...ajfa if I remember correctly.
