Nice sound on both, like already said, Presence adjustment should bring them closer.

Is the 800 the same amp anyway?, or was that only the first run of 800's.

Both sounded great but I give a slight edge to the JMP.

People have been saying this for ages that the late 70's mast vol jmp's sound better than the jcm 800's . And I 've had 2 jcm 800 2204's a 1983 and currently a 1984. And I agree. Why oh why marshall dosen't reissue this model I'll never know.I think cosmetically they look better also.May'be if this forum contacted marshall they would listen......not lol.

I just listened again with headphones, and not even a doubt, the Jcm800 sounds much better to me! It just goes to show how subjective good tone is. Actually they are fairly similar, and one would only hear a significant difference by listening to them back to back like in this video.

Every you tube video I have heard the jmp alway's sounds better to me. Jcm 800's to me have almost a too harsh a brightness to them.

The 800 seems it's just coming from down low, then through and not stopping ......SMACK.... and you're on the deck, chest caved in and your lights are out......

    Still like both though.

The 2203 clearly has more bottom like you'd expect from the 100 watter. I liked the 800 better.
It sounded punchier and less muddy to me.

800 sounds more punchy and would cut better on a full band mix.

I'd go with the 2203, the distortion characteristics sound a bit more complex to me, the 2204 a bit flatter, at least that's what I'm hearing in the recordings.

I am lucky enough to own a 1980 and 1979 JMP 2204 and a 1984 JCM 800 4010 which is just a JCM 800 in a 1x12 cab. They all sound great but the JMPs win and the 79 JMP is my favorite! You always know a JMP when you hear it!

Based upon the recording, JCM but I’ll bet a few knob tweaks could change that decision.

A friend of mine has/had a 1977 JMP that sounds freaking amazing.

    I’ve got a 4010 that, with a 412, sounds as good.

Nice job and excellent tone. I liked the JMP in this video. This is the horizontal input 800 that came after the original vertical input JCM 800 2203 that immediately followed the JMP MV series. It would be interesting to hear the JMP compared to an original 1981 JCM 800 2203.

they both sound the same to me, especially if you A-B them very fast.
I think the best way to do these tests is 'blind' so you're not influenced by pre-conceived notions
