Unfortunately the 800 is a 2204 while the JMP is a 2203 so you have to that into account. But still, I’m glad I have an example of both side by side.

I’ll post my thoughts in a while but for now here’s a super quick clip I did last night. I’m planning on doing some more clips with lower gain and maybe some more dynamic playing to really showcase the differences.

Ignore the fact that the JMP is missing the knobs. They are all at noon except for master and gain.

    What tce63 said.
They are both dialed in too gainy for my tastes however I do prefer the JMP. I can't even say why, specifically, however it sounds more refined(?) , musical to my ears.
I have always had a preference for the JMP.

I like them both, but I have always favored the JMP
My first Marshall was a 2104 MV
And my buddy John had the 2204 JCM 800, they both sound great.
    Cheers

I see JMP is the favorite here but its a tad dark sounding to me I vote for the 2204. I think I'd throw some Chinese tubes in both of those amps to brighten them up. :yesway:

I don’t wish to derail the OP’s thread.
But I am going to bring a clip of my Origin’s trying their best to cop a JMP - MV tone

I also have a JMP 2203 and JCM 2204 and they have the same differences that I hear in your clip.

The JMP always sounds more stately and "bigger" even at lower volume. The JCM is more bratty and brash. I don't know if the difference is JMP vs. JCM or if it's the difference between 50w and 100w heads or both.

Although I love both of them, if I had to choose one it would be the JMP 2203. No hesitation.

you should do the comparison by adjusting the presence knob as one has twice the presence of the other due to the design which keeps the same NFB resistor while the 2203 has twice the power...

They both sound good, some minor EQ changes/presence/different guitar or speakers and they might sound identical.
The 2203 is always going to have a little more body vs a 2204. So I am afraid you are just going to have to find an 800 era 2203 and JMP50 with MV, redo your recordings twice back to back and report back- ‘forum orders’!!

I think it’s mostly the lower plate voltage that the jmp’s have that makes them warmer and richer sounding than the jcm’s imo.
