Anyone use a single 12 with their 50w plexi? If so, do tell.
Why would you want to ?
If concerned about blowing speakers or sounding small, you want a K85 / K100 or an MC90
You can use a speaker rated 100 watts or more.
The speaker should be rated 2X the power of the amp.
EVM 12L is a good choice, there are also some new high power Celestions.
For 1 thing, to reduce the loudness.
Yep. Celestion Redback.
Best speaker I've tried.
EVM12L in TL806 cab
Couldn't find a good clip of the Redback, but I found a Celestion Redback I.R. clip.
Is it accurate to the real deal...?
What style of music really determines what you get from the guitar/amp/cab connection.
My ears really perked up at the 8:22 mark..
Couldn't find a good K85 clip...
Other than stating the obvious... 50w head into cab matched for high volume. I've found there can be benifits to using just one speaker (with a lower wattage)... when recording or lower volume playing. Using just the one speaker and a careful ear to drive the amp up in volume, can be rewarding.
Alot of time you listen to amp distortion only, but adding the cone movement can add an extra dimention to the tone without ear splitting volume. I think it's all about a balance in performance with the amp and speaker and the way you need it for your own application.
The new Redback is rated 150 watts and would probably make a good choice.
I put my 74 MKII 2204 in a custom made Marshall JTM 1x12 combo cab and it works looks and sounds great! I use the Celestion G12M-65 Creamback. I use an attenuator along with the London Power Scaling mod and can get it to sound blissful at any volime.
Whats left to attenuate after the LPS...
I read quickly through:
Jones for clip, but you never posted one, or did I miss it...after you got your amp back with LPS mod.....
That Flux Tone speakers system is some pricey #$%#! I'll take a Marshall Power Brake or THD Hotplate, if ya could still find one of them..LOL
One of my cabs is a DIY 1x12 20x 24x 10.5". I often run my 50w through it attenuated for low vol wanking but its for my DSL 15.
The trick with a 1x12 is to manipulate the sound waves into thinking its a multi speaker cab. You don't want a perfectly square cab and you don't want the speaker sitting directly in the center. By placing the speaker offset in one corner all corners receive sound waves at different times creating a much bigger 3D tone.
I could be a bit crazy though
I'll take some of that craziness!! Great post
This could be done with a 4x12 or 2x12....
Any pics and clips....?
Ill post a photo latter but there would be no need I would think with a 2x12 or 4x12 as multi speakers have lots of different waves reacting with each speaker.
This may be my speaker choice for this Studio Classic. DO you have one or did you just get a chance to play through one?
I've tried every Celestion.
The Redback knocked them all out.
Does everything good.
The opposite of Greenbacks.
K85 is the old British label... at some point, either when they went Chinese or before, they reclassified it to 100w and it became K100. Supposedly without recipe changes.
