Hi, my name is Anthony King. I've been the owner of my 1974 Super Bass 100W now for 28 years..bought it in 1988. I found this forum looking for answers as mine is being worked on. It was modded pretty good when I bought it and played many a punk rock shows with it this ways. In 2001, I had it brought back to stock a la Billy Zoom from the band X. He does great amp work. He also put in a wattage attenuator in the back to bring the volume down. I then had it brought to '69 Plexi specs from another friend out here in Tx..Cody Pappas. It sounded really great at this point. I took it upon myself to re-tube and bias and set the bias too high so it was super clean without much compression. Anyways long story short, Cody says there's some weird stuff going on with the polarity switch and I recently bought a THD power soak so I am in the process of having that looked at as well as taking the wattage attenuator out and just using the Power soak. I want to keep the '69 plexi mod in there but bring everything else back to original. I hope to learn a lot from this forum and possibly get some ideas to keep this Marshall alive and well! I believe this amplifier to be the best sounding amp when it's working right..I love the sound of it and am trying to get it back to sounding great and maybe even better.

    Welcome Anthony.
That amp sounds cool - evidently it has gone through some changes too.

I can't help with technical info at the level of detail you are talking about. But raise any questions in the Workbench forum section whenever you need to.

My amplifier is getting fully gone through and will be brought back to almost stock except for the tone mod. Wattage attenuator will be taken out. Really excited to get it back and hopefully this month but probably the first of the year. Also have my '63 SG Special coming from California refinished and repaired from crack in headstock..should get this late this week or early next week. This will be a very Merry Christmas when I get those 2 items!

    Welcome Anthony!!

Another '74 Super Bass owner here! Mine is also due to see the Doc, but I'm keeping my high gain mods, but otherwise will be gone thru with a fine tooth comb..probably due for filter caps as well...

Mine is a rip your face off gain grinder, but that's how I like my Marshalls!!:hbang:

Here are a few pics of the amp inside and out and the SG just after refinish.. IMG_0857.JPG IMG_6587.JPG IMG_6593.JPG IMG_6594.JPG IMG_0857.JPG IMG_6587.JPG IMG_6593.JPG IMG_6594.JPG
Mine used to be a gain monster back in the 90s. I kinda wish I still had it like that now but I really like the tone now. I used to play with a lot of punk bands in SoCal back then and my sound was a little dirtier than it is now. I've loaned my head to the Toy Dolls, Adolescents, and other punk bands that were on the same bill and liked the tone! Mostly bands from England that had to rent equipment loved to borrow it! I've had mine almost 30 years now..they're like old Chevy motors..never die..just tune up every once in a while!

Happy to report my Super Bass has a clean bill of health, some old mods removed, (but NOT cascaded pre-amp!) NOS pre-amp tubes, Svetlana 6550s and a PPIMV to boot! I love it EVEN more now!

1960 was the last of the butterscotch Catalin tips.:naughty:

I got my SB back too so I'm stoked! Had some resistors replaced and the wattage attenuator taken out. It is a lot gainier now it seems. Sounds real crunchy and I'm still playing with the 2 volume knobs to get a real workable sound that I can use in most of my music. It sounds best with the bass volume down lower than the treble volume..like bass at 10:00 and treble at 12:00 or 1:00 positions. Also getting used to using the THD attenuator which works pretty well. I got some static that I need to find the source of but it's not too bad. Maybe a patch chord but I need to go through an elimination process to isolate it. It gets worse as the volume goes up.
