Paul Stanley seems to want everyone to think of him as an intellectual. Stanley seems to think of of himself as the smartest person in the room and needs to be stroked. Stanley needs you to feel that he's suffered through dealing with others. Team player, as long as, your doing his team. Typical person who thinks of himself as the center of the universe. How many people have you met like this?
The show And I liked how they got an entire new league of followers, with a couple of catchy tunes, I had many friends in the mid 70’s that became Kiss fanatics, I still thought more of Black Sabbath than Kiss And I had found Judas Priest in 1976
I like KISS. I am not a fanatic by any means and have never dressed up as a character for any occasion. Their music is their style and I like it, you know most of it. I like so many bands/musical entertainers. I liked the pairing on KISS ALIVE II with Beth followed by God of Thunder. That was dynamite.
I don't believe that any popular band is overrated. Any band that is hugely popular from The Beatles, Zeppelin, Kiss, Nirvana, etc had to have had something that appealed to the masses or else they wouldn't have acheived said popularity. I may not like some bands that are super popular, but for me to say that they're overrated implies that my opinion is paramount and the opinions of their millions of fans are null and void.
It depends how you rate things. If you wanted good time rock-n-roll with a great show and a party then I'd say they weren't. If you want to be critical of their music, every instrument and care if they've mastered it then yes they were.
I don't know about underrated band, but if you want to talk overrated guitarists... Vinnie Vincent's (mostly out of key) playing is difficult to endure. I haven't heard much, but what I have heard is punishing! How this guy-ish landed the job as lead guitar player in KISS is puzzling. His lack of intonation (and hand vibrato) alone should have disqualified him. Horrible ear! Imagine being locked in a room, forced to endure this...
