    I'm looking for some opinions from you grizzled tone masters to get rid of my shit gear and pick up something that will serve me well the rest of my miserible life.

    I'm looking for an amp that can do early Allman Bro's to Jethro Tull type distortion.

    I think my dream rig would be a plexi, a twin and an a/b box, but that is way too much amp for my needs.

    Maybe if you guys can suggest an amp to pair up with my Fender blues jr that would cover the overdrive tones that I'm looking for, that would be cool.

    I play mostly at pussy volumes, like 90% of the time. :(

    My budget would be $1,000 or under.
    Any amp suggestions would be appreciated.

    Somewhere with a Friedman Marshall & Les Paul.
    You can pick up a used DSL 50 watt for $6 to & $800 but they're not pussy amps.

    They have a nice clean channel.

    Duane Allman used a 1968 50 watt plexi. Bass specs. That one, completely assembled with a head cabinet is $895 plus $ for shipping 172. If you have a cabinet, and if you can push $1,000 a little bit, that would be the way to go. You can have them put a master volume in it so you can get it at any volume you like, it wont sound fantastic, but when you crank it up with a nice Les Paul, that'll be the tone.

    The other thing you could look at for quiet volumes would be the new class 5. It wont nail it perfectly, but it would be quiet, and sound good. Throw a few pedals in front of it. Would sound really good.

    get yourself an early 80's 4010 combo or a late 70's jmp combo and you will never look back:) these babies got tone!

    I'd say a used 1974x but that would probably still be over your budget & most likely too loud.But it would get you what you want,no need for the twin.Maybe a clone/kit with power scaling or MV though.I haven't played a Class 5 but it's on my to do list for a home use amp.

    A Plexi or Twin is way too much amp. The Fender Hot Rod Series is really good. I'm getting one and I own a Marshall '72 Lead 50 watter.

    Well, maybe a plexi will inspire him to find more oppurtunities to crank.

    There is no substitute for a nice plexi if that is the sound you want.

    CLASS 5 FTW!!!!!

    These little crank monsters have a ton of tone and will keep ya happy if your looking to jam without blowing out your ear drums.

    Sounds like you are on the right track Mike.

    I suggest a Re-Issue. 1987X (50 watt small box) Marshall with an effects loop.

    The effects loop is a must so that you can run a old Alesis/Yamaha/Lexicon etc.. reverb multi effect processor. The great thing is that you can use the Input/Output volumes of the processor to "attenuate" the volume. That is to say CRANK the amp for tone and set the volume level with the processor. This works very well. Then add additional OD with a pedal if you wish.

    There will be those that say no it will cause artifacts "tone suck" etc... Seriously, that is BS. I use 100 watt half stacks at conversation levels by using this method and have done so for over 25 years. If you have any additional questions just send me a PM. I bought my 2007 1987X from used guitar center .com for $800 as a 10 out of 10.

    Good luck and don't settle for less. By this method you WILL achieve studio quality tones in all of your live settings.

    Think outside of the box!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I have recently played thru 4 different Hot Rod Deluxes at jam nites and they were ALL junk unless you use a pedal board into the clean channel.

    I can't get MY sound from pedals as I'm spoiled playing a Gibson straight into a JMP 2204 and the gain channel on the fenders is just BAD.

    OMG, I thought I was full-o-shit.
    I ran an old processor like this for years, until it fried on me. Literally, I mean it had smoke rolling out of it and sizzling. (It died a noble death, as a warrior should.)
    In any case, it was an old DSP128 that only had one usable sound, reverb. It had the input and output volumes that you are talking about and I got very usable tones out of my POS 3203.
    Guess that is why I kept that rig all these years?
    Oh man, I'm jump'in on used gear postings now.

    I'm going to get face-punched for this, but why not a Soldano Hot Rod 50? Warren Haynes has used Soldano stuff for Allman Bros forever. You can find 'em on craigslist for around $1000. Single channel, hi/low inputs, FX loop. Very cool. One of my favorite amps.

    I would also like to +1 on the 1987x. Those are really sweet.

    OK, Guitar center lists two in the used gear for around $1,000.
    One on the local craigslist, but it didn't have the fx loop. (Still $1,000)

    So technically, your suggestion of a 1987x fits the requirements that I specified.:thumb:

    I'm gonna go play a class 5 first. (cuz I'm a cheap bastard.) And because I don't have the chance to play a 1987x in the near future. I'll keep my eyes open, but I NEVER buy without playing first. (lesson learned from historic GAS.)

    Regarding the Soldano, I never thought Warren got Dickey's tone? Maybe it's just me, but Warran's tone is much raunchier, with Dickey's more sweet and singing. Only talking about tone here. Warren is a great player and I was always a fan of gov't mule. (even when he played a strat):)

    I have a blues jr. in my living room as a low volume practice amp. I have a tubscreamer (ts-808 reissue) in front of it to get overdriven tones at low volume. And I really like it. It's nothing like my Marshall rig, but for practicing/writing, it's great. I disagree with the bashing on the new Fender amps. I paid $450 for my blues jr. iii (new), plus like $170 for the tubescreamer, and the tone out of that pair is phenomenal for the price.

    Hi all,
    Been scanning local adds and saw a 1987x for sale. Contacted the guy and he thought the amp was already sold. Oddly he said that it did not have a "tone sucking" fx loop. Did they make such a reissue?:hmm:
    BTW, looks like the sale fell thru as he relisted for $950 (was $999).

    I would hate to spring for my dream amp without the "tone sucking" fx loop, as this was the means I wanted to use to tame the volume. (instead of a "tone sucking" attenuator.):)
    What reissue is this and do you guys think it's worth $950?
