What I meant to say above, is that I think most people agreed with my decision to keep the deposit, but part of them also felt that is wasn't necessarily the proper thing to do.

67..................IMO, you have too much of a conscience.

You are perfectly right to keep the $'s.

I know it's a thing about morals and the right thing but you ARE doing the right thing.

Hopefully, you'll get what you want without any issues.

    CL is a strange place.

I recently turned down an offer of my midnight blue (discontinued color) Rickenbacker 360 and this guy is calling me a jerk and an asshole when he didn't get what he wanted.

I have the Rick with another guitar as a trade offer for a Gibson ES 335...............not a $ offer........but I'll listen to offers.

It's CL, so I'm aware of the lowballers and bottom feeders out there.

I guess when you don't get what to want, it's OK to spew.

I know that this discussion is dead but imo the person gave you tmi, I would have kept the deposit-- business as usual. Unless your saying they asked for the deposit back because they need all the money they can get since she got diagnosed but still thats pretty wack they asked for it back and put anything on your conscious. That would be some gutsy shit to lie about but if they asked for the money back without all that info you need to keep the deposit to teach fools a lesson.

Keep it. That’s the point of the deposit. You took it off the market missing out on a potential sale.

I am neither conservative, nor liberal. I exist outside of the matrix, free of its sociopolitical construct.

I'm inclined to believe this is a type of scam depending on how you'll rerun his money (electronically, snail mail?). I'd keep the money. Business is business.

One thing you need to watch out for when selling things on CL is the location. If somebody tries to change the location last minute, it's likely a scam. If the person is meeting you at their house, it's likely not a scam since you know where they live.
I always meet people in the parking lot by the police station near my house

We usually meet at my local Sam Ash, that way the buyer can tryout the the instrument.

My wife is a vendor at local craft shows.

When there is no power available, she uses a small generator to power some things.

I used the Chafon with a Fender Mustang 1 to demo a pedal to a buyer.

I did this in my Nissan 200V small van while in the parking lot of the GC in Totowa, NJ.

We didn't have to go in the store.

I did the demo in my van and did the transaction.

    Deal.:applause:

    The question is;

What are you going to do next time somebody wants to give you a deposit to hold the merchandise?

Future deposits are non-refundable, of course.

You also should stipulate a time limit that the deposit is in effect. You can't take the item off the market indefinitely.

Also, with the time limit, there needs to be a starting point. For me, it's when I receive the deposit. Even that can be tricky.

If it's personal check snail-mailed, the 'clock' begins when the funds have cleared my account. And any other submission, it's when the funds are freely in my possession. Either way, I send an email/text/etc. when the deposit submission officially begins, lol.
