Once again all the scammers ruin it for good honest people , but dealing with CL makes you have your guard up and I understand and appreciate the premise of a deposit and of how it works and it's not rocket science and people should be held to there word ! You try to be fair and nice to people and they take that as license to roll out the door mat !

The buyer called me a few minutes ago. I told him that we're keeping the deposit, but that I would include the Faber-Germany ABRH bridge and post kit ($102.00 value), should he decide to purchase it. I think that's fair.

I just sent him a refund, and told him that should he decide to change his mind, it's here for him. Keeping money that I didn't earn just feels wrong to me.

It's weird how your mind can make you physically ill. Someone once said to me; "If it feels bad, it is bad." I use to get a similar feeling after a night of hard drinking. Not just a hangover, but like I did something wrong. Weird!

You did the right thing. I don't think the guy would lie about a possible medical condition regarding his daughter, and if I were him, I'm sure my priorities would be elsewhere as well. I'd have kept the deposit all but a few situations, and this is one of them.

Yes! That's exactly what I was thinking last night. I didn't sleep well at all. 4 hours at most. He sure sounded happy about it, so we're good.

You did what you felt was right even though you did not have to, that is admirable. Even if the buyers explanation was bogus that still makes you the better man.

as a general rule (my rules), I consider the deposit like a layaway, or down payment. If you buy the item, the deposit is cash already paid. If you back out, I keep it.

That's my understanding on how deposits work.

I've worked in service industries, where people want you to come out & give estimates. You have to pretty much go out & assess, measure, design & draw out as if you are going to do the job. Some companies do that for free, some require a service fee. The service fee works like a deposit though, that way, you get paid for coming out & they get that money back, when you do the job.

In CA., sending a truck out for an hour, will cost the company $100. Insurance, pay, gas, etc., doesn't come for free.

Anyway, you have to do what is right by your eyes.

The other thing is, in CA, you have a 3 day backout (cooling off) period, before the contract is bound. So, if you want someone to start now, you will be paying a deposit, since the company will have to order & fabricate custom made-to-order parts for your custom job. No deposit, means I wait until the contract is binding before & spend any money. If you want to get the ball rolling now - deposit...

You did the right thing brother, I know I posted differently in the beginning of the thread, and told a couple of stories as to why, but I more than likely would have done the same thing you have already done. Plus if I related the consequences to my wife she would have told me to do the same. One of my sons and one of my granddaughters are diabetic. Cheers

If it would have felt right, I would have kept it. It just didn't, so I gave it back. Had I mentioned a no refund policy before accepting the deposit, I think I could have rolled with it.

I know most people here would do the same. I think most feel I was justified in keeping the deposit, but that doesn't necessarily mean they think it was right. We all know how it is with gear... Sometimes you think you found something you want, then something clicks that tells you it's not. I totally get it. I want people to love what they purchase from me. You never know? He may one day list something cool that I want.

    Keep the deposit.

The fact that you were receiving other inquiries is all the MORE reason not to accept deposits. First come, first served.

Yeah, but most don't follow-through. Plus, I've decided to hold onto it. I was going to buy a Custom Classic in black, but those guitars just don't have the sound.
