Think these will do it? (KR Audio T1610) I can cut holes in the top of the head so they can stick out.

Look up Tung-Sol KT-150 tubes and get back to me. Audio Research uses them in some of their tube amps and they seem to be gaining popularity among the tube audiophole market. A pair of these tubes will put out 150 watts. The nice thing about them is that if you really wanted to build an amp with them, it's not hard to get the transformers you'd need for them.

There are some audiophile amps running 845 transmitter tubes.

SOME designer out there will try to make a production run of boutique amps that uses any type of tubes that he thinks are interesting and that there is an adequate supply of. In some cases that designer then attempts to corner the market on spares and then jack the price up to infinity and beyond.

Oh, KR audio...aka Kron, I think. The company that gained no small degree of notoriety for having an amplifier reviewed by Stereophile Magazine and when the bench tests came back "Utterly bizarre, WTH is wrong with this amp design?", the reviewer withheld a recommendation and instead the very eccentric and egotistical designer of the amps started accusing the technical evaluating engineer (John Atkinson) of using bench testing methods that had nothing to do with real music. Well...John was using the same industry standard testing protocol for audio equipment that every test facility uses. And NO other amplifier ever tested by John would go into such bizarre oscillatory behavior as the Kron amps under test.

I don't know which was worse for the company....the really whacked test results indicating flat out bad design work, or the designer/company owner fighing so hard to justify his bad design work by attacking the test methodology instead of owning up to the fact that his amps would go into ultrasonic oscillations if a fly farted in the next room.

I think four 6550/KT88 would be better and cheaper.
