I’ve joined the forum today. Following a very long break from playing (around 35 years!) I picked up where I left off in 1973 and have recently joined a new functions type band. This means playing all sorts of music most of which I completely missed first time round so most songs are completely new to me. I use a Les Paul and a Strat (my preferred) and a recently acquired Marshall JCM 900 combo, the 4502 model with 2 x 12 Celestion speakers and have been building up my selection of effects pedals. The question I have regarding the amp refers to the very thin sound it has (on either clean or gain channels), it’s as though the amp is passing through a graphic equaliser with all low frequencies removed. Before I got the amp it was given a major service with new EL34 output valves, pots and some sockets / wiring and the bias was set however it really doesn’t kick as I’m sure it should, or maybe this is normal. In all honesty get a fuller frequency sound from my other Marshall, an MG100 solid state amp. I would prefer to use the JCM for upcoming gigs so does anyone have any suggestions, apart from using the MG? I looked on-line for any ideas and found this forum so I’m relying on you.

    Welcome to the forum, MFer!

What speakers are in your combo? Does it sound better cranked? I've never owned a Dual Reverb so I have no real experience.

Hi there, thanks for the welcome. The combo has two 12 inch Celestion G12t-75 speakers which I believe is the usual spec for this amp. I noticed another correspondent has complained about too much bass on his amp, I have exactly the opposite problem. Any suggestions appreciated, thanks.

Forgot to mention that although it does sound better with lead tones when cranked there is still a lack of low frequencies which make the sound thin and lacking in ooomp if you know what I| mean.

This would make the speakers out of phase which I agree could effect the bass response but the amp was professionally serviced before I got it and the speaker wires were renewed. Reversing one speaker connection however may be worth trying and I will give this a go and report back. Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum

I have a jcm 900 4100 half stack it came with 5881 pv that I had changed for el34s but have found that the tech had not changed the screen resistors to proper value

Hope that's a start to help

Welcome to the forum, if you’re talking about the 900, try a patch cable in the efx loop, and play with the level knob on the back, my buddy John ‘s amp woke up with this simple trick, his is a DR 50 head, but the same should apply to your amp as well. !!

The patch cable made a big difference on my 900 but better yet was the 7 band boss eq that I started running

I do not have a 900of my own, but I was able to preform this test on my buddy’s amp and it worked, I am sure an eq in the loop would be awesome

What you can do to a 900 for more lows is:

Hi guys, thanks for your various comments. Just to get a couple of responses out of the way its Suffolk, East Anglia UK. You're right 35 years is a long break, other stuff just got in the way until that mid-life moment and I didn't want to buy a Harley so got myself a Les Paul.
I've tried reversing the connections on a speaker and it sounded dreadful so I guess the servicing guy did it right. Could you explain a bit more about the 'patch cable in the efx loop'. What should I do and what effect could I expect? Also thanks to amadscientist for the suggested modification, I'm not up to doing this myself but if all else fails could talk to local amp tech who may know how to do this. Its great to have contact with everyone and see your responses. Cheers.
