Ignore in this post anything pertaining to Jimi’s pedals - my question is simply is there any proof to the accepted theory that Jimi had all of his amp dials turned up to 10 ?

Has anybody read anything from his roadies, Eddy Kramer, Eric Barrett that confirm this ? Or is this speculation? Be honest....

next time Eddy Kramer does a live Q & A, somebody must ask this question.

    ✌️ not this ☝️

I could be wrong but if all of the dials were turned up to ten I don't think the sound wouldn't be very good. I mean it may have been mud city.

This is a very interesting question that I’ll be following. My belief is that the only people who would truely know the answer is the techs themselves. I don’t buy into the everything on 10 thing simply because I don’t think 10 is the sweet spot on any amp. Also, venue is gonna be a factor for settings in lots of situations.

    Doubtful.... and testable

Btw, imho, Hendrix had the talent, NOT the gear sense.

Hell the man never even bothered to get lefty guitars or even have his reverse righties properly set up. All that video of him winging it with tuning by ear in mid-song or bending notes to compensate...and iirc he had a reputation for blowing speakers

This was NOT a "proper stable gear not yet available" issue. More like he was talented enough that his blatant disregard for equipment couldn't hold him back

He was like the guitarist version of a supersoldier who could easily slaughter everyone with a spork

I read an autobiography on Jimi years ago, and his roadies/techs said he frequently started with one setting and by the end of the show all the dials were pegged/dimed/moved to 10.

I, and I'm fairly certain a lot of other people on this forum, have turned all the knobs to ten on collectively hundreds of 50 and 100 watt plexi's and it sounded friggin epic.

You guys have to remember the EQ on the supers leads doesn’t do a whole lot so every knob on 10 works much better on super leads vs other amps like say a fender.

I have always dimmed Marshall’s and use the guitar volume and tone from there. You can cover A LOT of ground by doing that.

You don't just play the guitar, you also play the amp. When everything is on 10 of course a Metallica riff will sound like absolute shit. You have to play accordingly to what the amp is doing. This may seem obvious to some, but I thought it would be worth mentioning.

    10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10.
In fact I am starting to realize that the knobs are just a waste of space.

    Funny.

And, thanks! ampmadscientist, for the condensed Lawrence of Arabia. I don't have time to watch such a long movie.

I've seen the Sweden clip where he adjusts the settings carefully, thus proving he didn't have them on 10 all the time. I've also seen film of him turning his amps up during songs ( no doubt to compete with Noel, you can see Noel turn HIS amps up in that Sweden clip, making his bass sound like shit), and we have the evidence ( primary evidence, no less) that his roadies provide which state he dimed them by the end of the show. A bit of the Cream amp volume syndrome going on. Mystery solved.

I'm not so sure about your assessment...

You have to figure that equipment was limited. Name one lefty player, before 1970, that had a custom lefty guitar?

Celestion speakers were pretty stuck at 25 watts. The mindset of the engineers, was that 4- 25 watt speakers was 100 watts & would handle a 100 watt head. 100 watt amp heads were fairly new & not too many mere mortals had their hands on one. Plus, they figured that most people back then, were running a full stack, not ½ stacks like became popular later on...

As the realization of more power & larger venues became evident, so did the need for more efficient & powerful speakers, etc.

I remember all the shows we did in the '80s/'90s, w/ PA amp's 1000 watts & under, whereas, 1000 watts is bottom of the barrel nowdays. Nowdays, everybody are running self powered speakers...

Fender print ads from the 60s offered lefties, iirc for a surcharge of like +$50

There's even factory examples starting from the early 50s, although those are hella rare and stunningly expensive today (but NOT back then, when they were oddballs not supercollectibles)
