    greetings

i have an old Vantage VS696 (japan) that plays really well, sounds great but the pickups are microphonic.
i've tested the pickups by talking into them and i can hear myself in the amp.
tapping them also comes out of the amp. with my SG i don't have a problem so i know it's not my amp.

does anyone have a solution to quiet these bastards down?

    here's a pic of a VS696 (not mine)

Shielding helps with noise and the occasional AM radio station...but potting cures microphonic everytime.

hearing your voice thru the pickup and tapping on it and getting sounds do not mean the pickup is microphonic

the cover on the back is shielded. where the pickups go is unshielded.
[edit] the wires for the pickups are shielded [/edit]

well i get loud high pitched feedback when the strings are muted and the amp (1W) is cranked.
it's unplayable at loud volumes whereas my SG doesn't have that problem.

Old Japanese vs what SG?.......it could be a huge differance....the best potted pickup could feedback like a mother fucker....not saying it is not your issue....but i see nothing posted that says it's definetly microphonic........shitty maybe

Frankly I don't know if potting those pickups are really worth the effort. I would buy some better ones myself. Do you like the tone so much that you don't want to upgrade them?

If you want an easier fix than potting you might try replacing the springs first. That can change the resonant frequency of the assembly enough to solve a microphonic issue. Assuming that's what the issue is...

agree with what Buggs? i say again... define shitty. care to elaborate rather than just saying they are shitty?

anyway two shits entered the pot and two polished turds leave.
i'm happy to report that both pickups no longer have the annoying feedback problems.
i can't afford new pickups but if your buying i'll start browsing
cost me $5 and little time.

much thanks to thetragichero, madmmx, chuckharmonjr, and Ken :dude:
