If you're wondering what that device is, where there's a hand-drawn circle and "5V05" badly written above,
that looks like a Schaffer-Vega Diversity System (a 70's wireless unit).
Schaffer-Vega Diversity System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's been said to be quintessential to Angus Young's tone, as the unit did some compressing and coloring of the tone.

Come to think of it; my initial thought of '5V05' is supposed to be SVDS (Schaffer Vega Diversity System).
Quite a few of the greats used it, and there's been a reissue version by that enthousiastic guy that cops Angus' tone to a T (SoloFil Dallas or something). :yesway:

As far as the Grail [#1] is concerned in the pics above and a few other earlier ones i definetely see the stem of a pot sticking out the left rear side.

Friedman, J. Suhr & M. Soldano have all seen and swore the grail is unmolested but Ed is a tweaker and i know what ive seen.

Other pics of the Grail have that same hole plugged later so the chassis is drilled for something.

    I love this JMP rig ... !!! All 1959's

I believe the top left head with cable plugged in is the Grail with logo intact with woody just underneath,

The hole in the back of Edwards plexi is were Jose Arrendondo added a master volume(plus some Jose magic) the screw is a plug for where the master volume pot/knob was.Ed would purchase his MXR effect pedals(early to mid 70s) at Dr.Music in pasadena. The techs that looked at Eds amp(Suhr-Friedman-Soldano-Fryette)all viewed the amp in the 90s which by then Eds plexi was put back to stock values.Ed did recently say that all the techs that looked at his plexi in the 90s basicly ruined the sound of the amp.

Well as far as i'm concerned it's settled Ed' Grail Tone on the first few albums were a 60's era MARSHALL 1959 with a Master and a Gibson PAF overwound by Seymour Duncan himself played thru a hand made partscaster.

Cuz i'm telling you when i heard the fist VH album in the late 70's there was no other sound like that, not even close, throw in the tapping and killer vocals and the rest is Rock n Roll Hall of Fame stuff.

I think EVH has transformed rock guitar and inspired more people than any one artist.

And he hasn't gotten lame by playing the blues now he's still playing the same music for 45+ years. :shred::shred::shred::shred::shred::shred::shred::shred::shred::shred::shred::shred::shred::shred::shred::shred:

I've been down this rabbit hole a few years ago. I recall a tech in Denmark as being the first to go through the amp and was charged with taking it back to stock spec. When done Ed didn't like the tone and that's when all the American techs got into it. That's why they say it was stock when they saw it. I can't remember the guys name but it's out there somewhere if you dig.

Spot on. The guy was a friend of Ed's from where Ed's family were from I think. He produces - Twinkleland Amps if my memory serves me right. Peter Van Wheeldon from the Netherlands. Joe Bonnamassa plays his amps.

It's still plexiglass. The roadies got to it.
Looks like it fell off the speaker cab, and hit the floor.

What many people fail to realize, it's not the amp or guitar, etc...

You can take a great guitar player,
and give him the crappiest amp and the crappiest guitar...
and he will still sound great.

The great sound IS the player. Not the amp or the guitar, or any effects pedals.

Eddie is just a great guitar player.
The amp has very little to do with that fact.

If that's what you believe, then why are a significant number of your posts suggestions on how to modify an amp to achieve a desired tone? Is this an admission that you believe you're pushing snake oil?

Style and tone are two different things that clip if Ed, you know its Ed by his style the tone for example didnt sound like Van halen 1 at all, just a example.Gear plays a big part no question about.
